Kate DiCamillo's beloved children's book "The Magician's Elephant" comes to life in a stunning and heartwarming film adaptation that is sure to captivate audiences of all ages. The movie is a fantastical tale that blends magic, mystery, and compassion to create a unique and unforgettable story.

At the heart of the story is an orphan named Peter, played by Noah Jupe. Peter is being raised by a disabled former soldier named Vilna, played by Mandy Patinkin. Vilna treats Peter as a recruit, teaching him that life is all about hardship and danger. They live in Baltese, a once peaceful town filled with magic. However, since a recent war, everything is drab, and a perpetual cloud cover blocks out the sun.

One day, a mysterious red tent appears in town, and inside is a fortune teller played by Natasia Demetriou, who is also the film’s wry narrator. The fortune teller reveals that Peter's sister, who Vilna said had died, is actually alive and that to find her, he must follow an elephant. This seems impossible because there are no elephants in Baltese. However, fate intervenes when an inept magician played by Benedict Wong somehow brings an elephant crashing through the theater ceiling, falling on the legs of a wealthy older woman played by Miranda Richardson.

Some Baltesians want to destroy the elephant, but the local authority, a countess played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, wants to keep it and invites Peter to be its caretaker. However, Peter refuses because he wants the elephant to lead him to his sister. The king played by Aasif Mandvi, who likes to be “never not entertained,” challenges Peter to perform three impossible tasks in three days to earn the elephant's ownership.

The film's voice talent is superb, with Brian Tyree Henry as Peter's sympathetic neighbor and Mandvi as the high-spirited king. Director Wendy Rogers, a first-timer, brings a dynamic visual storytelling style to the movie, crafting an exciting chase scene for the first impossible task and using camera angles to add to the excitement. The human characters are fairly standard, but the title pachyderm is designed with enough realism to bring emotional and believable physical weight to the story. We literally see through the elephant’s eyes, a perspective that reminds us that what we are seeing is the viewpoint of another creature.

Kate DiCamillo and screenwriter Martin Hynes of "Toy Story 4" explore layers that are often overlooked in stories for children. Peter admits he is not sure how to accept help, and the magician must acknowledge the harm he caused, even if it was unintentional. As the humans debate what to do with the elephant, we begin to understand that it should not be decided by what they want.

The film's theme is how to think through problems, a rare and important lesson that is reflected in the choices made by the characters. From the encounter with the fortune teller, who gently guides Peter to shape his question to get the most helpful response, to the lessons he learns about accepting help, learning from failure, and reframing questions, we see all of the elements that go into finding solutions, even if they are not the solutions we thought we were aiming for.

In conclusion, "The Magician's Elephant" is a charming and heartwarming movie that teaches valuable lessons about problem-solving, acceptance, and compassion. The film's stunning visuals and exceptional voice talent make it a must-watch for all ages. The story reminds us that the most profound and difficult questions in life can only be answered by following our hearts and embracing the unexpected.
