grandparents
Becoming a grandparent makes getting older something to look forward to - all the fun of parenting, without the hassle.
REMINISCING
She finished putting her laundry away and sat on her bed. She picked up her cat and knew she couldn’t have made it through the past couple of years without him. She’s single and alone in the world (except for family who live all over the place). The only constant in her life the past 7 years has been her cat. He always knows when something is bothering her. And this evening is no different. He gives her a look as if to say, “Don’t worry. We’ll get through this. We always get through everything.” She gives the cat a hug and pets him for a couple of minutes. Until he jumps off of her lap and goes to lap up some water.

Grandmas Possession
”Grandma, why do you always have that old owl in your hands.” Looking up at her with wide eyes. She reached into her pocket and held it in her hands, she smiled looking at it while rubbing it in her hands. She looked at me and said, “Oh Sally this old thing!” looking at me forcing a smile. Just as she placed it back in her apron pocket I saw a tear.

Why Does Grannie Play Such an Important Role in this Teen Girl’s Story?. Top Story - January 2022.
One of my nieces asked me, “Why are you writing a book about teen age girls when you are so old?” “Good question,” I said. ”Because I have a lifetime to share with a teenager that is so long, rich and full of flavor with only a few years left. The teen girl has a short, thin, hungry timeline with many years to travel with less experience but perhaps she can find some maturity from mine.”

My Grandma's Secret
My grandmother was a night owl. Her childhood passed in 40s, when the Soviet Union was battling its 5 years in World War II. That’s when she got the habit to listen to the radio all day and all night long. The radio back then was the only source of information – they had huge radio speakers in the streets when the announcements about frontline were made. My grandmother loved to tell that the famous radio announcer Yuri Levitan had such a deep giving chills voice, that everything he’d say sounded monumental – bad sounded horrible, and good sounded great. There were rumors that Hitler personally was dreaming of hanging Levitan once he’d take over Moscow.

Christmas in the Sixties
I am thinking about what Christmas was like in the sixties. Not everyone’s, mine. I lived in a nuclear family: father, mother, me. My brother hadn’t been planned yet. A provincial town in Tuscany, an apartment in a popular neighborhood, furnished in a functional and modern way, because we were a family in step with the times. My mother worked, drove the Bianchina and did the shopping at Smec, the first supermarket to set foot in the center. We lived the economic boom with hope, proud of the progress that would only bring civilization, proud of the refrigerator, the toaster, the blender, the carbonated water with the potholders of the Idrolitina, the bottled wine on the table.

My Grandma
Listening to my parents and grandparents story times was something I dreaded as a kid but now growing up and understanding the value of family, I yearn to hear them babble about the life they have lived. This is just a couple of memories my grandma shared with me over a phone call that I recorded. I wanted to keep the text as close to her authentic way of speaking as possible since I believe that’s as important as the stories themselves. Please enjoy as she remembers some of her most important memories.

My Sekuru
"My Dearest Tafara, I am so sorry, I have been unable to respond to your letters because I have not been able to physically, morally, spiritually. There are so many things that are pressing me. Do you know I have been unable to pay for my shipping? I was let down by the American family. I was confident that I was going to get an award of a million dollars and I never got it. If I had gotten the award, you and Tendai were to get cars each.
