Treasured heirlooms
Let me start by saying that I have too many hobbies. I enjoy baking, cake decorating, scrapbooking, and knitting. Most of these hobbies I learned from my mom. My mom is a Nebraska farm girl. She was an active 4-H member from childhood through high school. Many people associate 4-H with raising livestock, but it also teaches skills like sewing, cooking, photography, and gardening. My mom did all of these things, but is especially great with fabrics. She made clothes for her children including matching dresses for me and my sister. She made stuffed animals and dolls, Halloween costumes and dress-up clothes, blankets and quilts. She sewed tiny clothes for our Barbie dolls. She even judged clothing entries at the state fair. Her sewing machine was often in use and next to that machine sat her orange "sewing" scissors. Everyone in the house knew that we had “junk drawer” scissors and “sewing” scissors and the two should NOT be mixed up.

When asked if I ever get bored I am genuinely surprised. People do that? Do they have the time to get bored? And with that I start going over things I have on my mind. Pretty crowded is that mind.

It could be a full blown career as a professional artist or simply a clever workaround when using that complicated spreadsheet your boss sent over on Friday afternoon. Creativity is a natural human behaviour, whether we like it or not everyone has a creative flair, the key is self-acknowledgement.
Wreaths by Kelly
I work for Senior Services for local government near where I live. Actually, to be more clear, I'm a second generation county employee who has worked for county government since graduation from a local university, in the same area where I was born and raised. I don't bring this up as something to toot my own horn. Instead, my current job is why I started creating crafts to sell to begin with.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make a Dress
My mother clears the dining room table. The centerpiece goes to the buffet. The candles move to the foyer. The stacks of papers are placed on chairs. I lay out the fabric on the wide expanse of the now-empty table. The smooth jersey is soft and yielding in my hands, pleasantly thick, but not overly so. The pattern is lemons: simple, big, bold yellow lemons. Here and there, deep green stems and leaves bloom between the fruit.

NSW Home RenovationsPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesGalaxy in a Jar with Kid-cut Label
If you ask my grandchildren what their favorite family craft project was, they will unanimously shout, "Making a 'Galaxy in a Jar'!" After all, they got to use all the fun stuff—scissors, markers, paint, and glitter... They got to do all of these enjoyable things: cutting, printing, stretching, stuffing, mixing, pouring, sprinkling, gluing, tying... They also relished the association, because this was a group project all of our grandkids did together. You should have heard the conversation and compliments they gave each other, as they noticed the different color and design choices others were making. (I haven't heard them talk to each other that much in a long time!)

Mariann CarrollPublished 3 years ago in FamiliesA Kitchen Update
A Quick Kitchen Update The old countertops just blended together with no brightness. When we bought our home five years ago, I thought the kitchen was filled with beautiful cabinets, lots of space and area to cook. Over time, the countertop (which continued as a backsplash) became dark and dreary and seemed much harder to keep clean and shiny. In fact, I often cleaned it over and over again and it would seem dull and dreary to me. Sometimes, the next day I would find some leftover residue from cooking the day before that I missed on this dark combination of colors. This was the same countertop that I always misplaced my glasses on as they blended in. This happened many times during the day.

It’s no secret that weddings are expensive. Whether you choose to buy or rent those additional decorations that add the extra finishing touch needed for your wedding photos, the costs add up. However, one thing that people forget sometimes is the art of DIY – and the affordability of it too.
