Sabah Borneo, also known as the 'Land Below the Wind', is a state located in the eastern part of Malaysia. It is the second largest state in the country, covering an area of 73,904 square kilometers. Sabah Borneo is known for its vast rainforests, beautiful beaches, and diverse culture. It is home to many different ethnic groups, each with their own unique traditions and customs.

Ethnicity and Culture

Sabah Borneo is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities. The largest ethnic group is the Kadazandusun, which makes up about one-third of the population. They are mainly farmers and are known for their colorful traditional costumes and intricate beadwork. The Bajau tribe, also known as the 'Sea Gypsies', are another prominent ethnic group in Sabah Borneo. They are skilled fishermen and are known for their stilt houses built over the water.

Other ethnic groups in Sabah Borneo include the Murut, Rungus, and Orang Sungai, each with their own unique customs and way of life. The diversity of these ethnic groups is reflected in the many different languages spoken in Sabah Borneo, including Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau, and Murut.

Sabah Borneo is a food lover's paradise, with a variety of dishes influenced by the different ethnic groups and their traditional ingredients. The most popular dish is hinava, a traditional Kadazan dish made with raw fish marinated in lime juice, onions, and chili. Another must-try dish is the bambangan, a pickled wild mango that is a staple in Kadazan cuisine. They also made their own alcoholic drink namely Kinomol (pronounced: Kee-no-mol), Tuak (pronounced: Too-ak), Tumpung (pronounced: Toom-poong) for example)

For those who love spicy food, the Bajau-style sambal is a must-try. It is made with a variety of local herbs and spices, giving it a unique and fiery flavor. Other famous dishes include the ambuyat, a sticky sago starch served with various side dishes.They also made their own alcoholic beverage namely Kinomol (pronounced: Kee-no-mol), Tumpung (pronounced: Toom-Poong), Tuak (pronounced: Too-ak) for example.

Yearly Important Events

Sabah Borneo is a culturally rich state, and there are several important events and festivals celebrated throughout the year. One of the most significant festivals is the Kaamatan or Harvest Festival, celebrated by the Kadazandusun community in May. It is a month-long celebration with traditional dances, music, and food, to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.

Another important festival is the Gawai Dayak, celebrated by the Murut and Orang Sungai communities in June. It is a harvest festival similar to Kaamatan, with traditional rituals and dances to honor their ancestors and ask for blessings for the upcoming year.

Other festivals celebrated in Sabah Borneo include the Regatta Lepa, a colorful boat race in April that showcases the Bajau community's traditional boats, and the Pesta Gambus, a music festival celebrating the Bajau's traditional music and dance.

Sabah Borneo is a nature lover's paradise, with its stunning landscapes and abundant flora and fauna. The state is home to Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another must-visit place is the Kinabatangan River, the second longest river in Malaysia, and home to a diverse range of wildlife such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and pygmy elephants. Visitors can take a river cruise and explore the mangrove forests and spot these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.

For a cultural experience, visitors can visit the Mari Mari Cultural Village, a living museum that showcases the traditional homes and customs of the different ethnic groups in Sabah Borneo. Visitors can also participate in traditional activities such as blowpipe shooting and fire-making and sample the delicious traditional dishes.
