Breastfeeding is very important for the health of the baby. Breastfeeding is also important for the immunity development of the baby for better health in future life. Breastfeeding moms need to consume high-quality nutritious foods to be able to provide an adequate amount of breast milk to the feeding infant.

It is also important certain foods to avoid while breastfeeding. All moms who are breastfeeding as well as all pregnant women who will breastfeed in near future should know about the foods to avoid while breastfeeding to avoid certain problems for the baby.

Avoid dairy foods while breastfeeding:

Certain dairy products, if consumed in excess by the mother may cause colic in the infant. Therefore, it is important to avoid eating too many dairy products as well as milk, if you are breastfeeding.

Avoid citrus fruits while breastfeeding:

Fruits are important for women who are breastfeeding. The high amount of acid (such as vitamin C) present in citrus fruits (such as lemon, orange, pineapple, etc.) can cause stomach upset in the baby. If you eat citrus fruits, eat a small quantity and watch for any problem in the baby.

Vegetables to avoid while breastfeeding:

Eating a variety of vegetables is a must for breastfeeding moms. However, it is important to avoid certain vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) during breastfeeding, because they can produce gas in the baby’s stomach and give trouble.

Avoid certain fishes while breastfeeding:

Fish is an important source of protein and energy for the breastfeeding mother. But, it is important to avoid certain fish (tuna, shark, mackerel, swordfish, etc.) that have high mercury content that may be harmful to the baby. Instead, you can eat freshwater fish.

Avoid spicy foods while breastfeeding:

Various spices (cinnamon, pepper, chili, onion, ginger, etc.) may cause stomach upset to the infant if the mother consumes them. They may cause stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Avoid alcohol while breastfeeding:

Consumption of alcohol by breastfeeding mothers should be minimal if any. It is also important not to breastfeed your baby after drinking until the alcohol is metabolized and cleared from your system. An average drink takes approximately two hours to clear from your body system. Hence, the mother should do breastfeed at least two hours after taking a drink.

Avoid caffeine while breastfeeding:

If a breastfeeding mother drinks excess caffeine, it may disturb the sleep of the baby. Adequate sleep is important for the optimal growth and development of babies. Make sure your baby gets adequate sleep. Caffeine may also cause irritability in the baby. Avoid excess, chocolate (with caffeine), tea, or coffee.

Trans-fat and saturated fats:

Trans fat and saturated fats are not good for the health of the mother and they are neither good for the health of the baby. Trans fat and saturated fats, if present in the food of the breastfeeding mother may reduce the production of omega-3 fatty acids in the baby. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the proper growth and development of the baby.

In our opinion, it is more important to know about the foods that can be harmful to the baby if consumed by a breastfeeding mother, than knowing about foods to eat while breastfeeding.
