Review of the Midnight Club

Great movie about young adults going through so much yet they have time to tell great stories they made up to keep some joy in their lives.

If you have a hard time with young terminally ill adults, then this may not be the movie for you. Even though the focus of the movie is more on the manor and it’s past, it does still touch base on the young adults and the fact that they are facing death.

Have you ever seen the tv show “Are you afraid of the dark?” I do not know if every country used to have the tv station Nickelodeon, but that is where the show first aired… I think. It was back in 1992–1996. I still watch it once in a while today. It is about kids sitting around a campfire and telling stories they wrote.

This is kind of what this movie is like. It has the same concept of young adults sitting around a huge table by a fireplace telling stories they wrote. The young adults of this movie are living in a manor for hospice care. All of them have some form of terminal illness that brought them to the manor.

Every night their only form of real enjoyment for these kids is they sit around the table sipping on some form of alcohol and of course being on medications that is forbidden. They are all smart and none of them take advantage of the drink. The main reason they are really in the library is to tell scary stories. These are stories each one had made up and they take turns each night telling their story.

The doctor who runs the hospice program at the manor is a famous actress herself. If anyone reading this is into scary movies then you will know who I am talking about. The main actress in the very first Nightmare on Elm Street. She is an odd doctor in the movie to say the least. One part the kids mention that they believe that she smokes a bit of that funny green stuff. Well first thing in my mind growing up with that from my parents… they would not be questioning what they should already know. That smell is undeniable. She does love each one of her patients on the program though.

Brightcliffe Home outside of Seattle is where this all is said to take place. No not a real facility. They claim this manor has been in this very spot for many years. The spot was picked for the magical powers surrounding the manor.

Looking up more information about the movie I did find out this is based off real life patients that a cancer patient asked the writer to write about her and her fellow patients sitting around the table reading the stories of the writer. This is a real book by the same name also. Sad thing is that before the writer was finished writing the book, just days before completion the one who asked for the book to be written passed away from her cancer.

All the stories told by each one of the young adults in the film are also stories the writer has written. The best thing is how strong each one of the patients is. All have such a strong will knowing death is just around the corner for them.

The Guinness book of world records said this had the most jump scares in it 21 to be exact. So that's a fair warning for those of you who do not like jump scares. It also goes on to talk about the history of the manor and the very first midnight club. What happened to the first club? Safe to say they all passed away but it was said they broke up the group instead of everyone passing away.

So much packed into only 10 episodes. I loved it and as hard it is to think about why they are at the manor. The movie keeps your mind well occupied throughout the movie to focus on other things than just that.

If you have seen the movie or get a chance to watch it let me know what you think. I thought it was a great little series. Too bad Netflix dropped season 2. From reading it might be on Amazon but I’m not really sure about that.
