Mom and Dad, why are you going to work?

Your answer determines your child's life

By Holy horsePublished 2 years ago 5 min read

Mom and Dad, why do you have to work? Perhaps every child has asked this question.

If it were you, how would you answer? Perhaps most of you would say: Mom and Dad go to work to earn money, and only after earning money can we buy you good things to eat, toys to play with, and beautiful clothes to wear. But this way is only to obtain the economic basis and the reason for making a living, neither adequate nor shallow.

01

You can indeed earn money by going to work, but you should not go to work just to earn money. When we say this to our children, the initial career view we pass on to them is that going to work is just a way to make a living. When a child grows up with this kind of inspiration, he or she will look for work in the future like this.

The treatment is good, and even if I do not like it, I also put up with it; in fact, I envy other people who can do XX, but my current job is very smooth, or forget it, honestly stay it; especially hate their work, but can not help it, to survive.

A person's life, from the age of 24 years old to graduation from work, until the age of 60 years old retirement, 8 hours a day, more than 200 days a year to work, work occupies a large part of our life, a person can not work from the sense of value, enthusiasm, and fun, his life will be full of complaints.

"Mom can't help it, it's not for you that mom works so hard." This statement sends the message to the child that mommy doesn't like to work either, and that mommy endures all this hard work for you. The direct result of this is that the child will be burdened with undue stress and a deep sense of guilt.

Jobs

The logic behind this is that mommy works so hard for you, so you have to be good, you have to do well in school, and you have to repay mommy well in the future. As a result, children learn to put up with it, pretend to know what to do, and are unwilling to share what they are unhappy about, slowly forming a "pleasing" personality.

What kind of answers should we give to children's questions about adult work? You may want to refer to the following answers.

Why do you always have to go to the office?

"Because I get paid for it. Dad and I earn money to pay for our rent, food, the things we buy every day, and our vacations. Also, I like to be with other people and do things that make sense. Like when you drew all the beautiful pictures in kindergarten and gave me the prettiest ones. At work, I also get to help a lot of people and make them happy."

Reminder.

When your child asks why his best friend's mom doesn't have to go to work, you can explain to him that some moms and dads prefer to stay at home. But they also have to work at home, such as shopping, washing clothes, and cleaning the house. Such explanations are very useful to make your child realize that work is normal and everyone has their job.

Do you get money every day?

"No. My boss doesn't give me some bills and coins every day. Instead, at the end of each month, our company's computer automatically tells the bank's computer how much money Dad should have in his account. After that, Dad can take his bank card and withdraw bills from the ATM."

Reminder.

If the child doesn't follow up with further questions, this information is enough for now. However, if you find it hard to explain to your child, you may want to ask him or her the opposite, so you can find out what he or she wants to know. The exchange of money and goods is a topic of great interest to children and one that is important for them to understand.

What do you do at work?

"I have a computer at my desk and I use it to look up information, write emails and organize files. In addition, I have to make or take many phone calls. There are times when I also meet with clients who come to visit."

Reminder.

It is beneficial for children to form an impression in their minds about work, although they may not be too interested in the specific details. Maybe you should find a half day to bring your child to work. However, if you are a nurse or a cashier at a supermarket it is not very realistic. However, you can bring your child in for a brief visit when you are not on duty, or take him to your cafeteria for a lunch.

Are the people you work with your friends?

"There are some people I like very much, so when I'm not working, we often meet and go to lunch together. Of course, there are some people I don't find so cute, and there are times when we have arguments. Just like when you play house or other games, there will always be times when you disagree, won't there?"

Reminder.

This is an interpersonal issue related to thinking and the child will understand that there are differences between people and we don't have to like everyone, but we should try to treat everyone fairly.

Why can't I come along?

"You can go visit the place where mommy works. But, you can't work with mommy. We don't have a place for you to work in the office, you work at the school. Think about how crowded it would be if mommy stayed at school with you every day."

Reminder.

Patiently explain to your child that before he can work, he has to go through a learning phase, first kindergarten, then school, and after that vocational school or university. If behind this problem lies the pain of separation, then you must convince your child that he can always find his mom whenever he has a problem - and of course, it must be when there is real trouble.

"Mom and Dad, why are you going to work?" This is a question we first need to ask ourselves.

A parent's heartfelt love for life and work is the most contagious, and it has a profound effect on children. If you can't really "love" it from the heart, then at least avoid the helplessness of "having to" when communicating with your child. Often, the daily conversations between parents and their children subconsciously determine the future pattern of their children.
