Febrile seizures in children are characterized by sudden states of unconsciousness, the person in question simply fainting, only to wake up crying, or not remembering exactly what happened to them. At the same time, these febrile seizures are accompanied by muscle spasms, but in no case should they be confused with symptoms of epilepsy.

These seizures occur in children up to 5–6 years. For example, if the little one gets sick with the respiratory virus and has a high fever, a febrile convulsion can occur, triggering as a result complications.

Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person. In any case, the former manifests itself differently from one child to another, some may even injure themselves, or simply lose consciousness for a few seconds, and then wake up crying as if reborn.

However, in the case of fever, especially among children who still cannot say what they have, it is advisable to seek the help of a doctor immediately. For example, in more severe cases, the child may wake up with his eyes crossed, later showing fatigue, or as the case may be, a state of calm as if nothing had happened.

In free translation, during febrile convulsions, the child's heart stops for a few seconds, as a result of which the little one loses consciousness, and in different areas of the body, there are those contractions, respectively muscle spasms that we talked about before.

But what can parents do in this case? First of all, it is important to say that these febrile seizures, as doctors say, are almost harmless. Most parents get really scared and panic.

What they need to do first is make sure the baby is breathing. Then, if there is a risk of injury, ie during the convulsion, the baby's contractions are very aggressive, parents must ensure that they are not injured. Also, let's not forget that it's only a matter of seconds, and we shouldn't panic.

However, the child will recover, but it is advisable to seek the help of a doctor to keep the child under the supervision and, eventually, to establish an appropriate medication to avoid possible complications.

As soon as the baby shows signs of a respiratory virus, especially since you don't know what to do, you should immediately seek specialist help. This way, you can avoid situations that you probably won't know how to react to.

But what are the signs that the little one is no longer breathing? First of all, you need to keep calm. Then you will look to see if the little one has bruised lips. This is a sign that he is no longer breathing. As soon as we notice that his lips are bruised, we will call an ambulance. If you know how to resuscitate him, namely mouth-to-mouth breathing, you can apply this resuscitation technique while you wait for the ambulance service to arrive at your home.

Also, don't lose your temper, no matter how hard you try. On the other hand, if the little one does not have bruised lips, so he is breathing, it is advisable to place him on the floor, or in a safe place, where he cannot get hurt or fall.

You should also remove any objects with or around which you may be injured. Again, one extremely important thing to keep in mind: during febrile seizures, you will place the baby on its side so that it does not suffocate.

Contrary to many people's beliefs, they should not be immobilized in any way but should be undressed. Don't even think about trying to give him any pills or water orally, as the baby may choke. After the manifestations of the febrile convulsions disappear, whether they are aggressive or not, the child will fall asleep. In any case, he will look tired and unwell.

But how can febrile seizures be prevented? As mentioned above, they are triggered by fever. Doctors recommend lowering your body temperature, but not with the treatment that an adult would normally take, but with proper medication. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person.

That is why, as soon as you notice that he has a fever, you will go to a doctor, who will most likely determine the cause and also establish an appropriate medication, depending on your age and, of course, the severity of the situation.

In other words, febrile seizures can be prevented by lowering body temperature as soon as it is observed that the little one has a fever. At the other extreme are febrile seizures that can last up to 15 minutes. In this case, the child will be kept under supervision. However, on average, febrile seizures last less than 5 minutes.
