Ramadan, the 9th month of Islamic calendar, is the most favorite time of the year for Muslims around the world. It is the month in which the holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad as guidance for all mankind. What brings comfort in Ramadan is that it is all centered on developing and maintaining inner peace where Muslims devote their days in this month after finishing their work to perform a long particular type of congregational prayer exclusive to the month of Ramadan which is “Taraweeh” prayer as well as they read each day one of the thirty parts into which the holy Quran is divided till they finish reading the holy Quran to the end, they fast from early dawn to sunset and they perform as usual the 5 daily prayers which are part of the core of Islam.

The fasting month of Ramadan really brings to the health more good than troubles. For example, it can lead to regeneration of the cells of immune system, boosts the cognitive performance and reduces stress as well as it increases autophagy which is the body’s ability to recycle old damaged parts and microbes, just to name a few. To benefit from fasting, Muslims should follow some necessary tips to fast safely including going for walks, staying hydrated during the time between breaking the fast and fasting, avoiding breaking the fasting with junk food.

Children are voluntarily fasted to train themselves on it and share their parents the spiritual rewards of fasting during Ramadan.

A misconception, people who don’t know about Ramadan fasting may have, is that Muslims can’t brush their teeth or swallow their saliva during fasting hours while the right concept of Ramadan fasting is that it is based on refraining from food, drink, tobacco products, sexual relations.

Ramadan is characterized by its drummer “Misaharati” who is a man goes around banging a drum and calls people to wake up before sunrise to eat the predawn meal “Suhur” to be ready for fasting.

The star, of Ramadan meal which means in Arabic “Iftar” after breaking the fast, is the popular Middle Eastern dessert known as Qatayef which is commonly served in every corner store and bakery as soon as Ramadan starts, you can make it also at home. Qatayef is a sort of Arabic sweet or savory dessert stuffed with a little surprise in the center can be a creamy filling “chocolate or cheese” or nuts or fruits, fried to crunchy then drenched into sugary syrup.

The beautiful common sight during Ramadan is Ramadan crescent moon and star lights that decorate streets and adorn houses as well as the traditional Ramadan lantern called “Fanoos” which can be seen hanging in window shops, balconies and holding up by children everywhere which brings joy to their hearts.

Ramadan is a cherished time of community, it brings people together every day where home visits to friends and families are necessary tradition in this sacred month which creates strong relations among people Christians and Muslims. Christians are keen to share Muslims their joy of Ramadan; they share Muslims their charitable activities, they exchange together visits and good wishes during this sacred month.

What a warm feeling when you see dates and water are distributed into the streets for free on homeless as well as passers-by who are late to get their homes for “iftar” after a long day at work so they need to break their fast by eating these dates and drinking water till they reach home.

Breaking the fast during Ramadan by eating dates has a spiritual significance where Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to break his fast with ripe dates before praying.

Ramadan is a month of mercy, the public squares of Islamic countries are filled as soon as Ramadan comes with “Ma’edet Al Rahman” tables which means “tables of mercy” where all kinds of free foods are offered for the needy and passers-by whether Muslims or Christians. These tables illustrate social solidarity and guide you in your life to the significance of spreading mercy everywhere and every time. The name of these tables is inspired from chapter Al Ma’edah in the holy Quran.

Ramadan is not to stay thirsty and hungry, it is not fulfilled by feasting on some tasty food and beverages, Ramadan turns you to Allah almighty and opens your heart to receive the light of his guidance.

Ramadan is the month of blessing, forgiveness and mercy.
