The next step is egg retrieval, in which the eggs are extracted from the ovaries by using a needle with the help of transvaginal ultrasonography. The egg is then combined with the sperm to get fertilised after about four hours of egg retrieval and is kept for the whole night to be fertilised. In about three to four days of this process, the embryo is implanted in the uterus, after which the final step that everyone looks forward to remains the pregnancy test.

However, the process of IVG does not include extracting eggs from females and sperm from males. This process creates eggs and sperm in the laboratory with the help of any cell in the body.

The process of IVF involves both male and female specimens. It is for those who are trying to conceive but are held back by infertility, whereas the IVG technique is for anyone who wishes to have a child but can not conceive due to many reasons, including infertility. It means people of the same gender can have kids related to them biologically, or a person who wishes to be an individual parent without any other person's contribution of genetics to reproduce a child.

As appealing as IVG sounds, the technology will still take decades to become a reality, as the process of creating eggs and sperm from the cells has only been practised on mice. It has yet to be practised on other species to know its full potential.
