The internet is flooding with the advantages and benefits of online learning. As the current situation complements with the approach, it is easily accessible, flexible and cost-effective. Yet, many students still prefer the traditional way of learning. Here, the question is, are they dumb or they don’t want to continue their studies at home? Well, none of the statements is true!

Unfortunately, no one is talking about the significant disadvantages of virtual classes when compared to the traditional ones. Moreover, educators from around the world have also identified a few major drawbacks that are plaguing the industry. To address them, we have compiled the list of problems for better understanding. Let’s have a closer look below.

1.Feedback is Limited

Problem: Since students and teachers are not seeing each other face-to-face, there is a possibility that the feedback giving system is not practised properly. Also, learners having problems with a course topic cannot directly approach their instructors. That’s why when they do not get personalised feedback on their assessments/concerns, it creates outrage and the sense of appreciation lacks among them. Experts think that the approaches used to give feedback in the traditional space differs from the online space. And this will always be the biggest drawbacks of e-learning.

Solution: Administrators can integrate good feedback systems to ensure no student goes unnoticed. Additionally, video conferencing can also act as an alternative for on-campus professor-learner sessions.

2.Causes Social Isolation

Problem: Individuals who are more comfortable learning with a group of people may experience depression and anxiety. Not only learners but teachers can also become prey of social isolation and anxiety issues due to little or no of human interaction. If we look at the bigger picture, it disturbs the mental peace and emotional well-being of a person. Therefore, it leads to severe mental health issues, where the sufferers have nothing but a cloud of negative thoughts in their mind.

Solution: To end this, educators need to adopt teamwork strategies that encourage communication and support opinions. Also, the environment must be of blended learning so that both the parties can equally get a chance to interact. However, it is important to look out for students who develop signs of social isolation as they need to be treated immediately.

3.Requires Strong Dedication and Time Management Skills

Problem: As most of the students are habitual of teacher’s scolding, they fail miserably when they are left alone to manage their lessons. Because there is no one supervising them or constantly backing them up to achieve their academic goals. They often find it hard to understand the topics or manage time to focus on the upcoming assessment. As a result, they end up running behind the schedule that affects negatively on their performance as well.

Solution: Building strong disciplinary skills and finding inspiration in learning alone is the key to succeed in online classes. Moreover, peer activities should be included in the sessions so that students get a feeling of the traditional environment while learning from home.

4.Focuses On Theory Rather Than Practical Implications

Problem: Although many e-learning platforms have upgraded their systems into a more creative and innovative environmental setting, yet one thing remains missing. That is the lack of connection of lessons with real-world applications. Almost all of the available materials are focused on providing theoretical knowledge than improving practical skills. Furthermore, without face-to-face interaction and traditional classroom environment, the workshops held online are of no benefit.

Solution: The only way to teach students the practical implications of the lectures is by conducting one-on-one sessions online. Here, the teacher’s only purpose would be to deliver their knowledge and ensure the learner gets what they are being taught. Plus, there are a few practice-based courses online that can be of great help.

5.Inaccessible to Computer Illiterate Population

Problem: Even though half of the student population have personal devices, this doesn’t guarantee that they know its efficient way of use. And the other half who are underprivileged, online education seems like a no option for them. Precisely, relying solely on e-learning as an educational method is not one of the brilliant ideas. It will not only cause panic, but most of the parents would have to drop their children from school.

Solution: Before adopting the approach, educators should ensure that students have access to a computer system and internet connection. Furthermore, they should be educated about the online space so that they do not fall prey of scammers and hackers.

All in all, virtual learning or e-learning should be considered as a compliment and not a replacement to the traditional environment. Because even the best online learning strategies fall short when it comes to fulfilling both students and teachers’ requirements and needs.
