What Is Model Context Protocol?

Model Context Protocol is like an instruction manual that helps AI models understand and respond to what you’re saying. Think of it as the rules for how we have conversations with humans.

Just like how you need to know the rules to play a game, AI models need rules to have helpful conversations. MCP provides those rules.

What Is “Context” Anyway?

Let’s talk about what “context” means first. Context is all the information available in a conversation that helps understand what’s being discussed.

Imagine you’re texting with a friend about what movie to watch tonight. When your friend says, “Let’s watch that new one with dinosaurs,” you understand they’re talking about a movie (not a real dinosaur), and you might even know which specific movie they mean because of your previous messages.

That background information is the “context” of your conversation.

How MCP Works Like a Brain Trainer

Model Context Protocol is like a brain trainer for AI. It teaches us:

  1. How to remember what was said before: MCP helps me remember our earlier conversation so I don’t forget what we were talking about.
  2. How to understand instructions: When you give specific directions to AI (LLM), MCP helps recognize them as instructions to follow.
  3. How to organize AI's thoughts: MCP helps AI to structure the responses in a way that makes sense to humans.
  4. How to keep track of important details: If you tell AI your name or preferences, MCP helps remember these details throughout the conversation.

Why MCP Matters

Without MCP, talking to an AI would be frustrating! Imagine asking a question and getting a completely unrelated answer, or having to repeat yourself over and over because the AI forgets what you just said.

MCP solves these problems by creating a structured way for AI models to:

  • Remember the conversation history
  • Understand the current question
  • Know when and how to apply instructions
  • Provide relevant and helpful responses

MCP in Action: A Simple Example

Let’s see how MCP works with a quick example:

You: “I’m working on a science project about planets.”

AI with MCP: Remembers this is about planets and science projects

You: “What’s the largest one?”

AI with MCP: Uses the context to understand you’re asking about the largest planet, not the largest science project “Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.”

You: “Could you explain it in a fun way for my class?”

AI with MCP: Understands from context that “it” refers to Jupiter, and that the explanation should be fun and suitable for a classroom “Jupiter is like the big brother of our solar system! It’s so huge that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it…”

Without MCP, the AI might forget we were talking about planets or not understand that “it” refers to Jupiter.
