The singing problems of every singer are different. But sometimes, they are self-created. There are some common singing mistakes that amateur singers make. If they continue making that mistake, the chances of them facing voice problems in the future increase.

Here is a list of the 5 most common mistakes voice students commit.

1. Not Practicing correct Breathing & Posture

A wrong posture while singing is when your shoulders are not uptight and your back is not straight. If you are not sitting or standing straight, your rib cage will be in the closed position. That is not an ideal breathing condition. Correct breathing and breathing control are vital for a good singing performance.

2. Not Finding The Right “Guru”

Singers are not only born, but they are trained as well. One of the common singing mistakes is not finding a good teacher or coach to teach you music. The right guru can guide you through various voice problems. They can recognize your voice range and tonal quality. They can save your energy and time, which might get wasted in practicing music, out of your voice range.

Due to the current pandemic of Covid-19, we all are minimizing our social contacts. All the renowned academies have turned to online education and other services to assure the safety of the people. Music aspirants need not worried as well. The institutions and gurus have started online music lessons for aspiring learners, to ensure that the learning is not affected. It’s better to get guidance from a good coach online or personally rather than keep practicing the wrong technique.

3. Not Warming up

Anyone connected to singing, whether they are still learning, or are professionals, are very well aware of the fact that singing can be a laborious activity. But that should not stop one from practicing music. There are certain "warm-up" exercises, which will prove helpful while training.

Vocal exercises are underrated even though they are extremely helpful in enhancing singing skills. Vocal warm-up exercises improve your posture, pitch, range, and voice quality. It increases your control over your breathing also.

A 10-20 minutes daily routine of vocal warm-ups before your practice session will prove very beneficial. So you should not directly start to sing the track or musical note which you want to master. Do a little voice warm-up before singing.

4. Not Practicing Correct Voice Range

One of the most damaging singing mistakes is to try to sing in an unsuitable music style. Every singer is unique, and their singing style is different.

A voice range is the range of notes one can sing effortlessly, ranging from the lowest to the highest. There are different types of voices, like bass, soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and others. One may be able to sing to a broad vocal range, but remember, comfort is the key. You do not want to strain your voice. You should stick to your voice range.

If you try to sing in the wrong voice range, you won’t hit a single note perfectly. It is very damaging for your confidence also. Recognize how high or low you can sing and keep practicing accordingly.

5. Not Being Yourself

Whenever someone realizes that singing is their passion, they are often inspired by a singer. It is wonderful to be inspired by someone. But your inspiration turns to be your singing problems once you start to imitate your ideal.

You should always maintain your individuality as a singer. Your voice and your singing style will only make you successful. An original voice is always better than a copy.

Take Away!

In the beginning, you are making your base of music learning. And if the base is wrong, what can be right in the future? It’s imperative to go ahead in the right direction. Make immediate rectifications if you are also committing any of the common singing mistakes mentioned above.
