How to Survive a Spiritual Curse (When You Don't Know Shit...Or Have Anyone...)
Part 1: The EDUCATED Fool... There I was...submitting my ninth application to whatever Nursing School would accept me in New York City. No one really told me that getting a Bachelor's Degree from Brooklyn College in Africana/Latino Studies would not only be a waste of time, but also a chain that linked me to more debt while I looked for a job using that degree. "Why would you want a degree in African/Latino History?" My Guidance Counselor asked.

Life of a Pre-Vet Student
Many people ask me what is it like to be a student who wants to become a veterinarian. Do I do it because I get to play with animals every day? It is honestly on a rare occasion that students in the pre-vet track get to play with animals because of the amount of work we do. We are on the same level as medical students because we take the same classes, but we just deal with animals rather than people. That is the only difference that I can see, but a lot of people have tried to dissuade me from continuing the path of becoming a veterinarian because they believe that all we do is play with animals.

#Teacher Life
I had no idea what I wanted to do when I went to college. I loved music and art more than anything. However, unless you're someone like Beyonce or Justin Timberlake, don't expect to find work. So, what else did I love? It took me a long time to figure that out. Then it hit me: kids. I love working and taking care of kids. Okay, now we're getting somewhere. So, I decided to become a teacher. I figured, "I'll make a real difference in the lives of children! I'll be set for life!!" Well, six years of college later, reality hit me hard in the face.

A Testing Paradigm for the 21st Century
Okay, let’s begin with some points of agreement: 1) Common Core has been a disaster; 2) "No Child Left Behind" is better labeled as “No Child Allowed to Learn”; 3) the mania for testing children repeatedly, with no chance to recover from a bad day or a misread question, is doing very little to improve the educational system in the United States.

Grappling with Giants
There are many giants in Literature—be it in folklore, fairytale, legend or just in the pages of our ordinary reading and appreciation: from the beanstalk clambering goliath of "Fee-fi-fo-fum" fame, to the benevolent clumsiness of the BFG. Then there are the giant characters—physically large and powerful, like Moses in The Grass is Singing (Doris Lessing) and Atticus Finch who is described as a big man in To Kill a Mockingbird. (Harper Lee). In The Great Gatsby Tom Buchanan is endowed with a powerful athletic body. These characters may impress with their physical strength and underlying emotional or mental power.

Crappy Advice from an American Teen
I guess I should start this by telling a little about myself. I’m pretty much just a messed-up kid from a small town in Georgia. I lived in one county pretty much my entire life, even though I’ve moved around quite a bit. I’ve been through some messed up stuff, but I never really let it hold me back. Many kids in my high school considered me smart, but I don’t know. I feel like I got into college on a fluke, but I plan on working as hard as I can to make sure I don’t screw up this chance I’ve been given.

Some Major Advice
During my four years in college, I've worn my way through three majors. I started with creative writing, and I loved it, but the thought of leaving school without "job opportunity" scared me so much that I made it my minor and switched to marketing. A year in marketing left me exhausted, with no joy for my major and dread in my heart at the thought of doing it for the rest of my life. I failed several classes, and I realized that having a major I hated wasn't worth my energy.

My First Year of University in a Nutshell
I write this stuck in a cave of revision notes, as it's—you guessed it—exam season! Even though I still have much to do (the biggest understatement) I can't help but reflect on my first year of university. For a background check: I'm currently studying in the U.K. as a Psychology undergraduate at the university of my dreams. It's pretty good, if we're referring to the league tables.
