How To Become An Artist

“Art is a way to be.” — John Cage

Artists are people who make beautiful things with their own hands using any medium of expression, as long as they create objects from which others can see, think and feel. They may use tools such as paint, chisel or wood, but the real beauty of art comes from the process. It will not look like you’re doing it yourself. Artists produce artwork in all forms of media and techniques from various materials. Whether it is oil painting, metal sculpture, canvas or a pottery wheel, artists create anything that reflects reality and conveys a sense of meaning.

There are many paths which lead towards becoming an artist and each has its own unique appeal. But if this article gives you some thoughts on how to become an artist, then perhaps you want to explore further into the subject, so here are my tips of how to become an artistic.

Define your skills

Before getting started with learning how to become an artist, you need to define what your strengths lie. There is no one ‘best’ type of art. As we know, there are several types of art but only one is better than others. For example, fine arts require skill in applying techniques to make the subject of the artwork look real while music requires the ability to learn composition at first level before progressing to more advanced technique. And that is why the question becomes very important. What skills do you have? Do you have the aptitude to draw, paint, sculptural work or do you have natural talent in working with sound, light or colour? If the answer is yes, then this journey begins. You need a few basic skills such as drawing, colour theory, proportions and proportion, geometry, line and design are some examples. After defining your skills, you should proceed to find a specific area where you have something special from another person. Here, you need to take a step back and really consider what it is that you have developed. Once you have identified what you want to do, you can start working on learning how to become an artist.

Find Art School/Online Courses

Taking art school/online courses will help you gain knowledge in many areas such as digital printing and 3D modelling techniques. With this knowledge, you will get the chance to interact with other talented individuals. These types of courses will let you build your portfolio and also help you discover your passion for the field of practice. For instance, I took 2 months online course by David S. Corley which helps people to develop their creative abilities. This course includes techniques to make handcrafted jewellery. This course is very beneficial in building up my understanding of design concepts. Once you have learned the basics of a particular type of art, you can move further and pursue higher levels of education. Online courses not just give you theoretical information about art but also practical training on creating products. Many universities offer different degree programs with focus on a certain kind of discipline. The major fields that are covered under these programs are Fine Arts Management, Fashion Design, Visual Communication, Advertising, Photography, Graphic Design, Commercial Business Management, Web Development etc. There are plenty of options available nowadays; check them out or choose the best ones according to your interest and expertise.

Set Your Goal In Life

At times you might lose motivation in life to continue with your studies. At such times, it is advisable that your focus gets back to becoming art. Set your goal in life and always have in mind the purpose you want to achieve. Then, once you have achieved your goal, motivate yourself to carry forward with your goals. Never leave something important until it is complete. If you fail to accomplish your goal, don’t worry because you will find a new one in time. Focus on the important aspects and concentrate on the future. You will set your heart on achieving what you are currently doing. When you do, you’ll enjoy and eventually achieve what you wanted.

As said earlier, even though becoming an artist is a difficult task, one needs determination to go through the journey with positive attitude and commitment. Good luck!
