How to Become a Sustainable College Student

Be the first to take action as you begin college

By Jade PulmanPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

As a college student, it can be very hard to live a sustainable life, but every college student must learn how to be sustainable and live green because in our society people are throwing away a lot of materials such as plastic, paper, cans, and especially food every day. As a college student, one needs to learn how to become a sustainable person because not only will it help one to save money, but it will also help the environment by keeping waste out of landfills.

Recycle and Reuse

There are many ways to live a sustainable and socially responsible life as a college student. The first way is to always try to reuse what you can instead of throwing them away to buy new ones. For example, one bought a plastic bottle of water, after drinking all of the water inside the bottle, one can reuse the bottle and refill it with water from a drinking fountain at the college or university and bring it to the dorm to drink water. This can save the student money because they do not have to buy another bottle of water from the university cafeteria.

Save Food

The second way to live a sustainable life as a college student is always to try to save food instead of throwing it away. This is especially important because every day a lot of wasted food is being thrown into landfills, so it is everyone's duty to save as much food as they can by getting a small refrigerator to store leftover food so one can save it for dinner instead of going out to eat. This can save the student not only money but also keep good food from going to waste.

Printing Paper

The third way is printing paper. This is important because everyday people print paper from the university simply because they can. To become sustainable, one should only print when necessary because with the technology we have today, it is possible to keep everything in electronic form so that we do not need to print it on paper, and then end up throwing those papers away when the information is no longer useful.

Technology

With the rate at which our society is moving, almost every college student carries at least one cell phone. That means college students are constantly charging their cellphones and laptops every day. To reduce the amount of electricity, they can rely on solar panels, especially those students that are renting a house. For those that are renting a house, it is much easier to put a solar panel on the roof or on the balcony to charge their electronic devices, and for those living in the dorms, they can buy a small solar charger for their cell phone, and leave it by the window to charge while they are in their dorms studying because that way they do not have to plug in the outlet to charge their device, which in turn will save the university electricity and they will live a more sustainable life.

In conclusion, there are many ways to live a sustainable life as a college student, but to be sustainable, the students must be willing to find creative ways to live a green life, and to work together to create a better environment for everyone. Also, it is important to understand that just because someone else is not living green, it does not mean you should not, because students must know that even one person can make a difference and they should encourage others to do the same to make the college experience a better place. Be the first to take action, and as you begin to live and become more sustainable, not only will you be saving money, but you will also be a role model to someone that is not living a sustainable life.
