Five ways to improve critical thinking

Critical thinking

By Akinsanya GracePublished about a year ago 3 min read

We are faced with a sea of choices every day. Others have a bigger impact on our lives than others, while some are minor and unimportant. For instance, who should I support in the next election? Should I give the newest diet fad a try? Or will sending emails make me rich? We are faced with so many options that it is impossible to consistently make the best decision. But there are many ways to increase our chances, and critical thinking is one particularly potent method. This method of approaching a question enables us to carefully dissect a circumstance, expose its covert problems, like bias and manipulation, and arrive at the best conclusion. The critical section may sound unfavorable, and in a sense, it is.

A person who employs critical thinking examines and questions each possible solution rather than selecting one simply because it feels right. They will filter out everything but the most pertinent and reliable information using the tools at their disposal. There are many different ways to approach critical thinking, but this five-step method could be useful for resolving a variety of issues.

One - Create your question first. Know what you're looking for, in other words. Sometimes, this isn't as simple as it seems. Your motivations may be obscured by other factors, such as promises that you'll see results in just two weeks if you're debating whether to try the newest diet fad. However, if you go into the situation with a clear understanding of what you hope to achieve with dieting—whether that be weight loss, improved nutrition, or having more energy—you'll be better equipped to sift through this information critically, find what you're looking for, and determine whether the new fad actually meets your needs.

Two - Gather your data. There is a lot of it available, so having a clear understanding of your inquiry will aid in identifying what is pertinent. You can seek the opinions of others or ask an expert for advice if you're trying to decide on a diet to improve your nutrition. Getting more information brings you one step closer to making a choice that will help you reach your objective.

Three - Put the knowledge into practice by posing probing questions. When faced with a choice, consider the concepts at play. What presumptions are made, and is my understanding of the data logically sound? You should ask yourself questions like, "What is guiding my approach to this situation?" and "Do I assume the sender is telling the truth?" when you receive an email that promises you millions. You should also ask yourself, "Based on the evidence, is it logical to assume I'll win any money?"

Four: think about the results. Consider that you've chosen a political candidate for office based on their pledge to lower the cost of gas for drivers. It's election season. That appears fantastic at first glance. But what about the long-term effects on the environment? It's important to consider an unintended consequence that could occur if gasoline use is less constrained by price: a significant increase in air pollution.

Five: Examine alternative viewpoints. Consider why so many people are drawn to the political platform of the opposition candidate. Even if you disagree with everything a candidate says, considering all possible points of view may help you understand why some policies that you think are flawed appeal to others. By doing so, you'll be able to consider alternative options, assess your own decisions, and ultimately make better choices.

This five-step process is merely one resource, and it won't make all of our difficult choices obsolete. However, it can support us in making more wise decisions. Finding what we're looking for in a sea of information can be made possible with the help of critical thinking. And it has the potential to make the world a more reasonable place if enough people use it.
