Bruce Lee: Philosopher of Life

When it comes to martial arts and film acting, you probably already know the name Bruce Lee. However, his contributions extend beyond those realms into the discipline of philosophy. Lee's philosophical insights are profound, penetrating, and inspiring. This article explores his philosophy and how we can apply it to real life.

Be Like Water

Perhaps Lee's most famous aphorism is to be like water: 'Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water,' he said. 'You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash.' Water, here, is about letting go of your mind to push through a situation, adapting to whatever is thrown at you. In daily life, this means changing with circumstances, keeping an open, malleable mind for addressing challenges on the fly, resilient and adaptable.

Simplicity

Simplicity was also something that Lee emphasized. He would describe it as 'hacking away at the unessential'. The principle is about shedding everything we do not need so that we can focus on what we do. Perhaps it means decluttering your living space, arranging your day's tasks, or being more critical of where you choose to spend your money.

Self-Expression

'Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself. Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.' Lee's words suggest being yourself means going at things in your own way, not succumbing to external forces that push us to think and act in prescribed, expected ways. This leads to closer results and a subsequent sense of fulfillment.

Continuous Improvement

Lee's philosophy of lifelong self-improvement is distilled in his injunction to 'absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.' This Zen statement is about lifelong learning, implanting a deliberate practice that, done every day, increases our learning capacity and self-worth.

Self-Discovery

'Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Wishing is not enough; we must do.' Lee identified the challenge of one's self-transformation being the most difficult to undertake. His idea stresses that it is not enough to 'know', rather in order to make progress one has to 'do' and actively learn through action.

Live in the Moment

Lee's philosophy of time takes the belief that our greatest achievements are always before us and boils it down to the micro-experiences of daily living. 'The successful warrior', Lee wrote, 'is the average man, with laser-like focus'. If we can learn to live in only the moment, to concentrate on what is directly at hand and without distraction, we significantly improve our immediate performance on most tasks and begin to lead a deeper, more present life overall.

Resilience

'Don't pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one,' Lee said. It's the principle of building inner strength to withstand adversity. It reminds us that trouble is a part of this world; we can learn to grow from it and weather it with grace and fortitude.

Lee's philosophy offers a pathway to growth and resilience. Adapting to changing circumstances, staying away from unnecessary complexity, being authentic, continuously improving, discovering and mastering oneself, living in the present moment, and bouncing back from adverse circumstances, are all part of taking life as an opportunity for personal growth and enjoying the journey.
