All teachers had the experience of having to deal with learners that are often rowdy and disruptive. In some cases, there will be a handful of students that are generally lacking discipline and are indifferent and disinterested in learning. There are classes that may have one or two pupils seemingly intent on causing disruption while the class is ongoing. Dealing with students with problem in discipline and transforming them to become better school children can be a real challenge.

Discipline in school is important in helping learners achieve strong academic gains and developing good school attitude can help reinforce this. Establishing a nurturing and encouraging learning environment can help learners with disciplinary problems develop a more favorable and positive attitude towards school.

As an educator, it is your main job to try your best in helping young learners reach their full potential. However, a lot of that is centered on the child and their attitude to learning. How do they acquire this attitude? At home from their parents, and from their peers? What can you do to help as a teacher?

Fostering A Love For Learning

Learners, young children in particular, often see school and learning as tedious, uninteresting, and a tiresome task which they are forced to do. Then again, once a thirst for knowledge and love for learning has been formed, their attitude towards school will be greatly transformed.

As a teacher, instilling a passion for learning in your students is one of the fundamental principles of fostering a positive attitude towards school and love for learning in general. Learning must be perceived as an exciting and rewarding process not as a dreary task. By showing a passion for pursuing knowledge through education, you can create a love of learning that will eventually become the foundation for developing a good school attitude. Share interesting information that is new to them, have insightful discussions about a diverse range of topics, and stimulate your students’ inquiry and curiosity. Foster learners to follow their passions in and outside of the classroom, through different activities like developing hobbies, reading, and other scholarly pursuits.

Exposing your students to different experiences will help them find their interests and passion for learning. You can share your own interests and passions with your students. As an important role model, you have to lead by example. If your students can see that you are wanting to learn more just about anything, they in turn will become more willing to delve into their own interests and passions.

Be more supportive and encouraging. There is that possibility that you might not always be keen on what your student finds interesting, but shooting down ideas or indirectly becoming dismissive just because you are not fascinated in it could immensely set your student back. Provided that it is not detrimental or improper, always encourage your students to continue learning more and more about their interests.

Establishing A Supportive Study Environment

Children’s attitude towards learning and school in general can be considerably impacted by establishing a conducive learning environment inside the classroom. Create a distraction-free learning space that is complete with the essentials for school, such as books and other learning materials. Promote consistent study habits and have clear guidelines they must constantly follow. Be always available to provide assistance and direction when your students need them, such as by helping with their lessons or explaining complex ideas.

Fostering a growth mindset is also an excellent way to create a supportive study environment for your students. A growth mindset refers to the belief that anyone can become successful and smart simply by working hard to learn new things and absorb new information. It is important to always take a positive view when your students do not know something. Show them that by finding out the correct answer is in itself learning, and this is how they can become smarter. By doing so, you are able direct their focus on constant learning instead of always relying on previous knowledge. Instill in your students how effort and actions produce success.
