A chest gun holster is a type of holster worn on the chest, typically by hunters, outdoor enthusiasts or special forces & SWAT teams to carry a handgun. A chest gun holster is designed to be worn over a jacket or other outer clothing, and typically features straps or harnesses that go over the shoulders to secure the holster in place. Some chest gun holsters also include additional pockets or pouches for carrying ammunition or other small items.

They are designed to provide easy access to the weapon, but also to keep it secure and out of the way while the wearer is moving around. They are also often referred to as chest rigs (which allow for carrying additional tactical equipment such as radios, knives, etc).

Chest gun holsters are made of leather or other durable materials such as nylon. Some chest holsters are also made of hybrid material such as a mix of leather and kydex. They also come with different levels of retention, some holsters have thumb-break or thumb-snap, others have a level-2 retention, and others have a level-3 retention that needs a button or a lever to be released.

Chest holsters are great for carrying a firearm while hunting, hiking, or doing other outdoor activities because they keep the gun out of the way while still allowing easy access to it. They can also be useful for people who need to carry a weapon for self-defense or for work, but want to keep it hidden under their clothing. They are also a good option for people who find it uncomfortable to carry a weapon on their hip or in a shoulder holster.

Who uses Chest Gun Holsters:

Hunters, outdoor enthusiasts and farmers: Chest holsters are popular among hunters and outdoor enthusiasts because they keep the weapon out of the way and allow for the use of both hands for other tasks, such as climbing or hiking. It is important to note that when you are hiking outdoors you normally wear a backpack. Backpacks are heavy and also interfere with traditional holsters worn on the hip or other OWB holsters. With a backpack, it would not be easy to draw your gun from the hip. Consequently, chest holsters in such situations are much more useful, convenient and quicker. For example, in case a cougar or mountain lion pounces on you and has you pinned on the ground, it is not easy to draw your gun from a hip holster. In such life and death situations both your hands are busy trying to protect your face and upper body. With a chest holster you can easily draw your gun and defend yourself at the same time.

Law enforcement officers and security personnel: Chest holsters are sometimes used by law enforcement officers and security personnel for their easy access and concealment capabilities.

Military personnel: Chest holsters are also used by some military personnel for the same reason, they are used by special forces and other military units that operate in the field.

People who carry firearms for self-defense: Chest holsters can be a good option for people who carry firearms for self-defense or for work, but want to keep it hidden under their clothing.

People who find it uncomfortable to carry a weapon on their hip or in a shoulder holster: Some people may find it uncomfortable to carry a weapon on their hip or in any other type of holster. Chest holsters can be a good alternative for them.

Advantages of Chest Holster:

There are several advantages to using a chest gun holster:

Easy Access: Chest holsters allow for easy access to the weapon, as the gun is positioned at chest level and can be quickly drawn with minimal movement. The same is true if you are in a vehicle such as a car or tractor or sitting on a chair behind a desk.

Hands-Free: Chest holsters keep the weapon out of the way and allow for the use of both hands for other tasks, making them ideal for activities such as hunting or hiking. These holsters allow you to move more freely while hiking, whereas a hip or thigh holster is more likely to hook with trees and shrubs during a hike.

Concealment: Chest holsters can be worn under a jacket or other outer clothing, providing concealment for the weapon.

Comfort: Chest holsters distribute the weight of the weapon evenly across the chest, making them more comfortable to wear for long periods of time even with heavier guns as compared to hip or shoulder holsters. The straps can also be adjusted to wear the holster higher or lower according to ones own personal preference. Due to the straps, these holsters can easily be adjust to the body type of an individual. Whether you have a heavy built or a light bone structure, they can easily adapt to your size. These holsters can also fit under both summer and winter clothing due to the straps. They are easy to put on and take off as you have to simply put it over your shoulder to wear it.

Additional storage: Some chest holsters come with additional pockets or pouches for carrying ammunition or other small items, providing additional storage options.

Versatility: Chest holsters can be worn by people of all body types and sizes, and they can be adjusted to fit comfortably.

Retention: Chest holsters provide a level of retention that keeps the weapon securely in place, but still allows for a quick draw when needed.

Weather protection: Chest holsters can protect the weapon from bad weather conditions.

Disadvantages of Chest Holster:

There are also several disadvantages to using a chest gun holster:

Concealment: Chest holsters can be less concealable than other types of holsters, as they may be visible under certain types of clothing. This can be an issue if you are not in an open carry state since chest holsters constitute as open carry under the law. Even if you are in an open carry state or have a permit, an open display of a firearm may make people uncomfortable if you are out in the public or at a gas station for example. Therefore it would require you to wear a jacket or additional clothing to hide the gun.

Comfort: Chest holsters can be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time, especially when sitting or when it’s hot.

Flagging: There is a higher risk of flagging yourself or someone standing nearby while drawing or re-holstering from a chest holster due to its position on the body. Chest holsters require more muzzle awareness and trigger finger discipline while drawing your gun. Therefore you have to be more careful while drawing a gun from a chest holster to prevent accidental discharge.

Mobility: Chest holsters can be restrictive and limit the range of motion, making them less suitable for certain activities.

Weather-dependent: Chest holsters may not provide adequate protection for the weapon in extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snow.

Holster choice: Chest holsters are not as common as other types of holsters, so the selection of chest holsters available may be limited.

Practice: It takes more practice perfecting the drawing and re-holstering from a chest holster as compared to other traditional holsters such as thigh holsters due to its position on the body.
