Mentioned below are some ideas that will help your kindergarten children in reading:

1. Pay Focus on Strong Foundation- When the base is strong then your child will never have a problem later on. Pay heed to phonic awareness. The kindergarteners should be aware of the sound that each letter makes and this will help them learn things better. Phonic awareness encompasses things such as blending the individual sounds, segmenting words, recognizing words that begin or finish with the same sound, etc. Phonics instruction should be explicit. Work on sight words as this will help your child in the long run.

2. Go for Reading Games- Games play a pivotal role in a child’s reading development as the child can learn by combing fun into learning. Comprehension ability gets improved drastically if you incorporate reading games in the routine of a child Opt for books that are not too difficult. As a thumb rule in case a child makes more than five errors while reading a page, this means the book is hard for him. So, go for something easier otherwise the child will feel dissuaded completely. Reading the same book multiple times is fine. When a child becomes familiar with a text it enhances his/ her fluency.

3. Help Children to Establish Connections- When you are helping your child to read, assist him to make connections. This will improve the reading as the child will be able to relate to things and consequently be able to understand them better. Something that the child has never seen nor has an idea about, he/ she will find it totally vague. You can even play a video or talk about something related to the reading if the concept that you are introducing is new or unfamiliar. For instance, if you are reading something related to a new puppy, talk about people who have a pet.

4. Inform About Reading Strategies- Tell the child that in case they do not understand something, they should read it again and again. They should also look at the pictures to get a hint about what is being talked about. So, even for a kindergarten student reading strategies hold a lot of importance.

5. Do Some Vocabulary Building- The child will only be able to read fluently if he/ she has a good vocabulary base. Introduce the child to new words regularly.
