A Day without School
By
Charlene P. Dawkins
Scanning through the clear glass window, “No school today,” said mom. His
heart jump with joy, “No school,” I exclaimed, “Yes that is right, the news says no
school, the Coronavirus,” she explained, dad emerges out of the room, before
she gets another word out “yea son,” it is causing much harm. Looking at his
mom standing beside his dad with her head on his arms like a dry log, He could see
a line of disperse anchored on her face, “don’t you worry your little head, son,
Mrs. Braxton called, and she has some school work for you, it should keep you
busy until school reopens.” Oh no, this supposed to be the best day of his life,
thinking to himself. His life is taking a different turn, I was about playing x-box,
zombies, brave frontier, and ghost nation, he thought about all the games, all the
things he love to do, and schoolwork was not one of them. He strolled toward his
mom with his shoulders slump over, and his eyes looking discouraged as grandma
pouched up in her chair getting ready to light her cigarette.
Consequently, reflecting on yesterday, it was like all the other days, a typical
day for him. Mrs. Weatherspoon made an announced over the AP system,
“Teachers could you please line up your students and come to the quiet zone,” she
announced. Mrs. Clark stood up from her desk, and requested the girls to form a
line, “Hurry girls, come now, boys, do the same,” she said.
Standing like statues before the principal, she began to speak on keeping safe,
she explained, “Students when you go to the bathroom make sure to wash your
hands, I want you to look at me carefully, if you feel you are going to sneeze,
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE sneeze in the armpit.” “All eyes on me! Look at the
arms, they are about to sneeze, in arms like this put it to mouth and sneeze within
the armpit, do every one understand?” she asked. She continued to explain why we
were doing this, “There is a virus that is going around; it is called Coronavirus, by
practicing these safety tips, you will keep yourself safe as well as others.”
Shortly after that, someone in our class began to sneeze, then another started to
sneeze, it was Nai, and Juan started to giggle at each other. AH…CHEW! Sneeze
Nai, looking at Juan with a sneaky look, Juan AH…CHEW! Sneezed Juan,
AAHHHHH CHEWWW! sneezed Nai. “Whose doing that?” questioned Mrs.
Weatherspoon. “Mrs. Clark class,” sounding like a choir, replied the students
. “After assembly, I would like to see those students, as a matter of fact I will be
visiting their class.” said Mrs. Weatherspoon. The students looked at Mrs.
Weatherspoon with her shoulders straight like a board, as her spectacles falls
between her nose bridge walking away in slow motion. Juan and Nai
made silly gestures with their tongue hanging out their mouth like a untamed
dog watching its prey. As the two boys passed by, she motions them, “come
here,” she gestured, “Why were you sneezing during assembly?” “We thought you
were doing a lesson on sneezing, and I wanted to get an A,” explained Juan.
Initially, thinking back, “school was Fun,” I thought to myself. Slowly walking
away from the window, grandma starting to light her cigarette, nose started to
itch, it is tricking, AHH… CHEWW.
