Do you know the #1 skill you can learn in today’s world?

Writing.

The ad that made you buy? That’s writing. The headline that made you click? That’s writing. The description you’re reading right now? That’s writing ;)

Everywhere you go, someone is trying to get your attention. And in today’s world of 5-second attention spans and unlimited content, attention is the new currency. People need attention to gain influence. Businesses need attention to make money. Movements need attention to enact change.

But what does this mean for you? Well, if you can capture attention with writing, you are valuable to many people. And if you’re amazing at it, you’re irreplaceable.

That’s where copywriting comes in. Copywriting is simply writing in a way that makes a person take a specific action:

• Buy a product/service

• Subscribe to a newsletter

• Follow someone on social media

Here I give you some simple, yet effective, copywriting tips I’ve learned over the past 2 years.

1. Copywriting is 80% psychology, 20% writing.

2. People love the words “free”, fast, and “easy”.

3. People buy with emotion (stories), then justify with logic (statistics, graphs, data).

4. Use rhymes and alliteration to make your writing more memorable.

5. Write first, edit later.

6. Place social proof near your headline to add instatnt credibility.

7. Skilled copywriters spend more time doing market research than writing.

8. Use the words “you” and “your” to make your writing engaging.

9. Talking about your flaws and mistakes can make you seem more trustworthy.

10. Use bold words and underlines to emphasize important points.

11. Solve 1 problem for 1 person, not 5 problems for 10 people.

12. Use short sentences to make your writing easier to read.

13. Use pictures with your testimonials to make them believable.

14. Emphasize the benefits of your features.

15. Your “zero to hero” story is one of your most powerful marketing assets.

16. Always test your headlines.

17. You will be perceived as more likable when you use the same words as your target audience.

18. Format your paragraphs into a smaller chunks so they are easier to read.

19. Ask questions throughout your copy to keep readers engaged.

20. Offering something fast is more appealing than offering it for free.

21. Use the “us” VS “them” to engage readers.

22. Copywriting is about making the reader feel understood.

23. Reddit, Quora, and Facebook groups are great places to do market research.

24. If you see a headline that grabs your attention save it somewhere for inspiration for later.

25. Write at 5th-grade level or below

26. Describe the prospect’s problem better than they can describe themselves.

27. The harder it is to read, the less they will read.

28. Read your copy out loud to catch mistakes.

29. Use active voice in your writing to make it sound stronger.

30. Use the website “Power Thesaurus” to find powerful words to use in your copy.

31. The right testimonial, case study or review can be worth 10s thousands of dollars for your business.

32. Turn your call to action into a call to value (benefit they will receive by clicking).

33. Using numbers in your headlines is great way to get attention.

34. Specific numbers are more believable than vague ones.

35. Read fiction to become a skilled copywriter.

36. Use software like ProWritingAid to proofread your writing.

Buyer persona- the starting point for all successful copy.

"A semi-fictional representation of our ideal customer based on real data and some select educated speculation about customer demographics, behaviour patterns, motivations and goals"

  • Getting to know your target reader intimately is critical to success- their buyer persona.
  • You cant write targeted copy that connects with your audience without this information.
  • A buyer persona informs ALL copy going forward.
  • Create your buyer persona(s)- do the exercise once, and get value for years to come.

But, if you’re a beginner wanting to learn, you’re going to need more in-depth content. In that case, I recommend the books:
