A Life-changing Lesson I Learned from Gardening
The coronavirus pandemic hit our lives in unexpected ways and brought our lives to a standstill. Frontline health workers took over to face the battle head-on while the rest of us were confined to our homes to stay put and quarantine ourselves. People lost jobs, schools and colleges were closed, factories were shut down and the manufacturing sector came to a halt. But it is said that with every challenge a new opportunity also arises with it.

Nature and the Creative Life
Living in the country has been such a welcome surprise. I was raised in the city and loved living there. After marrying and 6 years of living in the city, we decided to try country life and have lived in the country in a home my husband and I designed for 24 years.

Protecting Our Waters & Environment
My husband's Aunt, as the oldest sibling of her generation in the family, outlived all of her four sisters and brothers, so she is now the matriarch of the family... she's like 97 now I believe. So I do my part in helping to take care of her since she lives about two miles away. The last time I did grocery shopping for her I realized I forgot to pick up the old, body weight scale she gave me a few visits prior. I very willingly accepted it, because she said she wants to start lessening her load of material items in her home, and it seemed very well made; and when it comes to older, true quality products, I am definitely not a part of the throw-away society, just because it is not modern.

A Human Role
By now, I’ve realised that actions so slight compose no such difference on the grass I walk on or the sky I gaze. Still, to feed my moral compass, I walk to college, recycle aluminium cans, recycle food waste, recycle glass bottles, recycle paper and cardboard, recycle batteries, never drop litter and use reusable face masks. Perchance just yesterday, living in the belief that fellow actions like these made such change. The world saw no change. No improvement.

Listen to the Elders.
There are many facts about our environment's decline since the industrial revolution that are confronting. Some find it easier to avoid, I have been there many a time. Overwhelmed by the little it feels we can do, or that we simply do not know what to do. This feeling is not dishonest. Many people think they have the answer as well. I'm not denying that either as many a great mind is at work to solve the issues we have created. Yet, the two forces of corporate greed and environmental awareness are at play. This makes things even more frustrating when passion begins to evolve within the individual to protect the Earth. This can leave us feeling hopeless against the big guys. Fair enough. The truth is that many of us have lost our connection to the Earth. We stopped thinking to care about her through just trying to survive in the rat race of life. We get caught in the system, and I'm sorry to say but the system is based off of greed. As a result we only have 0.5 % of our oceans protected which hold 80% of our life on Earth, and we are losing 80'000 hectares of rainforests globally a day. With this comes the loss of the 1000's of species that are in their own system; the system of maintaining what we live on, our home. There is more to it though, we lost our connection to these species and appreciation for them. We know best because we are the top of the food chain. We also know how to fix it because we had the power to create the mess. Maybe we do. I know very little about how this world works and how to fix it. I do know that it is time to put my own ego aside and listen to the people that truly understand the land with their hearts, spirit and mind.
