Hey, would you like to "get small" as Steve Martin used to say?

(If you don't know him, you should look him up; he's hilarious.)

Anyway, the greatest mystery in science will make you feel extremely, extremely insignificant.

I am speaking of parallel universes.

Yes, the notion that everything you believed you knew – our planet, the solar system – is false.

Our galaxy, the cute girl in the next apartment, and all the other stars and galaxies in the universe

As far as our sophisticated telescopes can see, it's just a tiny fragment of an inconceivable object.

giant puzzle!

Okay, I feel small now.

The theory of multiple or parallel universes blurs the line between scientific and metaphysical explanations.

Comparing reality and science fiction.

This is depicted in science fiction films, but is it possible?

The standard response is that nobody knows for certain.

However, this is why it is called a theory!

Oh, and it's a subject of considerable debate in the scientific community.

There are names on both sides.

Like RumpelstiltskinNeilDeGrassTyson vs. LinusPaulingEinsteinStrudelmeyer.

Yes, those are notable names, but I'm joking here.

If you believe in the existence of multiple universes, you may feel a little better.

Stephen Hawking, the brilliant physicist, is in your camp.

He had a pretty spectacular theory about parallel universes, but I'll get to that in a moment.

later!

Which side of the debate are you currently on?

How can you believe in it if you do not understand what a "multiverse" or "mirror-verse" is?

Your ignorance of the "mirror-verse" will not "reflect" negatively on you.

Ha ha.

So, let's begin with the fundamentals.

Before recent years, scientists believed there was only one universe containing everything.

Everything known to humanity, hence the "university" moniker.

Again, I am referring to EVERYTHING we know, including the Earth, galaxies, and Minecraft.

In 1954, however, a Princeton graduate student named Hugh Everett emerged.

with the first multiverse theory.

He believed the universe was perpetually splitting and that each of these splits became a separate universe.

independent universe.

This is currently referred to as the Multiple Worlds theory.

(Yes, proponents of multiverses hold various perspectives, and Everett's is just one of many!)

So how does his work?

You can visualize it primarily as a flowchart with continuous branching.

Just recall every time you've ever made a decision or experienced something.

I'll give you a personal example now.

When I first entered college, I was unable to choose a major.

Astronomy was my favorite subject, but I was also obsessed with English and writing.

Well, I ultimately chose the latter, but what if I had chosen astronomy?

Would I be peering through a gamma ray telescope and developing my own intricate theories?

According to the theory of Multiple Worlds, yes!

There is a version of me that chose that path and is currently living that life!

There are in fact an infinite number of mes and yous, each with their own universe!

(Be prepared for an abundance of mind-blowing explosions today.)

Regardless, Hugh Everett's dissertation on his revolutionary theory was impressive.

enough to earn him a Ph.D., it was still too radical for scientific bigwigs.

community during the time period.

Over time, however, scientists returned to the theory and added their own variations.

We now have numerous models of how this multiverse would appear.

Some believe that these universes are like bubbles because, well, they cannot see each other.

We simply do not have that technology!

There's also a model that depicts universes as resembling stacked sheets of paper.

stacked atop one another.

Yes, I cannot fathom how that operates either.

Still, you have the theory that unifies them all!

Possibly, with each choice you make, you add a new universe's "paper" to that stack.

Perhaps this stack is one of several floating in a small bubble.

My brain hurts...

I recognize that it sounds completely odd.

But it's not as if smart people sat around and thought, "Whoa, check out this, what if the universe was like a bubble?!

Oh, that's so gnarly, man...These physicists perform mathematical equations that verify

out!

So, theoretically and on paper, multiple universes could exist... we just can't see

them.

Certainly not yet...

Consequently, what would a parallel universe look like?

Some characteristics of our universe may be unique, while others may be the same!

For instance, this parallel version of our planet may have grass, trees, and birds.

flying through the sky and such.

Nothing seems out of the ordinary to me!

However, it is possible that the atoms that make up all that matter are slightly different.

Depending on how the atoms in the atmosphere reflect light, the grass could be orange and the sky could be green!

Perhaps in this world, birds did not evolve into their current appearance.

Perhaps they resemble little dinosaurs without feathers flying about!

I've never been to a parallel universe, so I can't say!

What do you believe or wish it would look like?

Please comment below!

Before we can travel to these worlds, we must verify that they exist.

It is difficult to prove or disprove their existence, but science is close to achieving this goal.

the abstract and materializing it.

Thus, scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee are presently

similar to putting together equipment that could prove the existence of a mirror universe.

a representation of ourselves.

So, what is the strategy?

The plan is to propel a small number of subatomic particles through a 50-foot tunnel and past a detector.

extremely powerful magnet, and into a wall at the conclusion.

If some of these particles emerge as a mirror image of themselves on the other side, this is known as self-reflection.

means that science has made a monumental breakthrough!

Yes, a few particles getting tangled up in a magnet and emerging on the opposite side of a wall would be evidence that multiverses can exist physically.

I know, I missed the connection as well, but hey, you can't make this stuff up!...But I will attempt to explain it!

(This is not the parallel version of myself who studied astronomy and astrophysics.

however, I'll do my best!)

This experiment would demonstrate that it is possible to create mirrored copies of particles.

From there, hopefully, protons, neutrons, electrons, and morons (please, just electrons):

You know, the elements that compose our cells and everything else around you.

Therefore, it is possible that duplicates of ourselves exist in a parallel universe!

But was our planet shot through a 50-foot hole and slammed into a wall?

Possibly!

Some scientists theorize that the Big Bang that began everything could have been the collision and formation of two universes! (Oh my God, did your head just explode?

Likewise.) What does this imply?

Why is it so important to prove the existence of multiple infinite universes?

What about the fact that it is so awesome!?

Consider that every choice you've ever made has created a new thread in time!

It could make you feel less regret when you believe you chose the incorrect option.

roughly every time I dine out with my friends.

"Ugh, man, your dish is more appetizing!

"We should have ordered the Pasta Carbonara instead..."

Obviously, the significance of this discovery is much greater than that!

Remember that a parallel universe may contain elements and physics that we've never seen before, and that these may have applications in medicine and other fields.

Plus, there is the possibility that we could travel to an alternate universe if ours were to collapse.

starts having some problems.

Global warming, the sun's demise in 5 billion years, and YouTube going offline...

However, the actual difficulty lies in the journey itself.

How is it possible to travel to another universe?

Obviously, since we are discussing theoretical physics, there are many theories!

Initially, there are always wormholes!

To simplify the jargon, the most common way to visualize it is as spacetime.

as a piece of paper with holes punched into both ends.

Instead of traveling from A to B in a straight line, you can create a tunnel by bending the paper.

between the two points, and is essentially a massive space shortcut.

According to them, the same thing could work in two universes.

However, call me a party pooper, but suppose you have a specific universe in mind.

Let's go to the one with dinosaur birds and orange grass!

Do I simply enter the address into the aircraft's navigation system?

What are the underlying mechanisms?

I suppose I'll leave it to the intelligent to figure out...

In addition, there is Stephen Hawking's theory on how to travel to another universe.

It's as simple as falling into a black hole.

Yes, he theorized that black holes could be wormholes connecting multiple galaxies.

universes!

However, don't these entangle you as soon as you pass the point of no return?

I suppose that's technically a theory as well...

Regardless, hopping universes may be science fiction for now, but remember: holograms

Similarly, not too long ago!

Thus, everything is possible!

Phew!

I don't know about you, but I learned something new today, and if you did too, congratulations!
