Sapphire, the hardest colored gemstone (along with rubies), is the most sought-after gemstone in the world. Known for its particular shades of blue, sapphires come in varied hues, from the blues of the night sky to the bright yellows of the sun to the lush green of the grass, there is a color for everyone!

Buying a piece of sapphire jewelry can be an overwhelming experience, but once bought, there are so many positive changes that are believed to be seen in its wearer. There are a lot of factors that need to be kept in mind, from colors to clarity to the weight of the stone to know how genuine the gemstone is!

Buying a blue sapphire, for some people, is an investment, and should be treated as such. We need to ensure that we get the best price and the value for the product that it is believed to be, but the genuinity of the gemstone is also an important factor...why? Because we know that investing in gemstones can be an expensive affair.

Now that you’ve already invested in the magical blue sapphire, how to know the genuineness of the gemstone? Don’t worry, and keep reading the list we have curated to answer your doubt.

Look for Flaws and Inclusions

Color gemstones do not have a standardized grading system and it is extremely rare to find a blue sapphire with no eye-visible imperfections. Sapphire is formed in nature due to high temperature and heat and it is only evitable that it has natural fissures or flaws in it...which is actually the beauty of the stone.

A fake sapphire or a lab-made gemstone will usually have flawless clarity, even under magnification, and that is one of the distinguishing features that one can look for to know the genuinity of the stone.

Certified Gemstones

Good jewelers that have real certifications from all the important institutions provide their clients with certification of the gemstones to prove the authenticity of the gem. In case you have not received your certifications you can get them checked by gemologists who can examine the sapphire under refractometers and magnification Polaris scopes to know the genuineness of the gemstone

GemsNY is a certified jewel company, we have 50,000+ certified natural gemstones… so the quality and the genuinity of our gems are guaranteed.

Look For Air Bubbles

Lab-created sapphires are made from glass under a process that mimics the way a natural sapphire is formed. However, as they are essentially glass, there may be air bubbles left behind during production. This is similar to putting a screen protector on your phone, then seeing little air bubbles in whatever space you missed. Assess your sapphire from all angles and use a loupe to search for air bubbles. If they are present, then chances are, you do have a lab-created sapphire.

The Fog Test

Sapphires are known to be excellent conductors of heat and therefore hastens the evaporation process. Alternatively, glass isn't as good and will take more time to complete the evaporation process of moisture.

With that said, a quick and effective way to test a sapphire is by breathing on it and tracking how long the fog from your breath takes to clear up. If the moisture lasts more than 3 seconds, then it is safe to assume that your sapphire is probably not real.

When buying a sapphire, it is important to find reputable jewelry and seek an independent certificate from a certified lab to ensure that you are getting what you paid for. GemsNY.com has a wide array of natural sapphires to choose from amongst our 50,000 + natural gemstones, both treated and untreated.
