These remarkable creatures, the largest of all sea turtles, primarily feed on jellyfish and can consume well over 1,000 metric tons of them throughout their roughly 50-year lifespans.

What's truly astonishing is that jellyfish are 95% water and incredibly low in calories. To maintain a healthy weight, the average 500-kilogram leatherback must consume approximately 400 kilograms of jellyfish every day, roughly equivalent to the weight of a grand piano. While some sea turtle species selectively eat protein-rich gonads of their prey, leatherbacks devour entire jellyfish, mowing down vast numbers of these unsuspecting creatures.

The Turtle's Advantage: Armor and Strategy

Jellyfish are not entirely defenseless. Most species possess venomous harpoons, known as nematocysts, within their tentacles, which they use to paralyze and kill their prey. These harpoons are released upon contact and can also irritate the skin of potential predators. However, they are entirely ineffective against sea turtles. These reptiles boast thick scales covered in keratin, the same material found in nails and claws. This leathery armor protects their skin while they hunt, and any captured prey attempting to escape finds itself impaled on the keratinized spikes lining the leatherback's esophagus.

Jellyfish Reproduction: The True Challenge

While sea turtles have adapted to make individual jellyfish easy prey, the real challenge lies in the jellyfish's remarkable reproductive capabilities. Most jellyfish species have evolved to reproduce both sexually and asexually, allowing them to rapidly increase their numbers. In tropical environments, jellyfish reproduce throughout the year. In contrast, in more temperate climates, species often engage in massive blooms, where jellyfish multiply at an alarming rate.

Human activities exacerbate this issue. Fertilizer runoff from farms introduces chemicals that simultaneously kill other marine life and trigger jellyfish blooms. Rising water temperatures caused by climate change expedite jellyfish reproduction and extend their reproductive seasons. Furthermore, marine construction and pollution create ideal conditions for jellyfish polyps to attach, grow, and mature.

Protecting the Natural Balance

Addressing the jellyfish invasion requires a multifaceted approach. While numerous policy-based solutions are needed to mitigate these issues, one key strategy involves protecting the natural predators of jellyfish, many of which are currently under threat. Small-scale fisheries, essential to communities in regions like Mexico and Peru, often use gillnets that unintentionally capture and kill hundreds of sea turtles each year.

In the Eastern Pacific, such practices could push leatherback sea turtles to extinction within the next 60 years. Fortunately, researchers have developed inexpensive tools to minimize these risks. Attaching green LED lights to gillnets has proven effective in helping sea turtles, dolphins, and seabirds avoid fishing gear. Solutions like these enable small-scale fishers to support their communities while minimizing their impact on these leathery ocean defenders.
