The Okefenokee Swamp that stretches across the states of Georgia and Florida is one of the last great bastions of wilderness that is left in the southern United States. This is North America's largest black water swamp and has become a favored eco-tourism destination.

Stephen C. Foster State Park is within the Okefenokee Swamp and there is lodging scattered all over with 60 sites for RV trailers, nine fully-furnished cottages with backyard fire pits, and of course, you can go camping with your own tent and camping equipment. The park has been recognized as a Dark Sky Park and was named after Stephen Foster an American songwriter popular for immortalizing Georgia's Swanee River in song.

The wildlife that make their home here include alligators, white-tailed deer, and turkeys which are most often seen during the day.

At night you can hear barred owls hoot and frogs sing.

In the springtime, swallow-tailed kites arrive to nest and during the winter river otters can be seen in the main waterways.

Throughout the swamp, you can hear the calls of sandhill cranes.

The large mammals that can be encountered are bobcats, black bears, and gray foxes.

For bird watchers, there is the red-cockaded woodpecker.

A few minutes north of Okefenokee there is Laura S, Walker State Park where visitors can see all kinds of wading birds and gopher tortoises.

Among the wading birds are egrets, herons, ibises, wood storks, and the sandhill crane.

Wildlife of Hawaii

On the island state of Hawaii, there are more than 21,000 species recorded in the Hawaiian rainforest, surrounding ocean, and other locations.

Locations for wildlife sightings include:

At the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm north of Kailua-Kona you can see seahorses and take a tour of the farm.

At the Kanaloa Octopus Farm, you can see and learn about octopuses.

Seabirds in Hawaii include wedge-tailed shearwaters, noddies, and Laysan albatrosses. These birds nest in coastal locations on the main Hawaiian islands. There are white and red-tailed tropicbirds and great frigate birds along coastlines and cliffs.

Among forest birds are the black-billed apapane, the yellow-green amakihi, and the brown and white elepato.

Hawaii has several species of sea turtles with the most common being the Green Sea Turtle. These turtles prefer isolated, uncrowded beaches. A lot of them can be seen at the Kauai Napali Coast State Wilderness Park.

Spinner dolphins live in pods and frequent the calm, protected bays. These are small dolphins and are amazing leapers.

Hawaiian endangered animals include:

• Nene goose

• Oahu Tree snails.

• Hawaiian Monk Seals

• Hawaiian Hoary Bat

• Sea Turtle

• Crested Honeycreeper

• Hawaiian Moorhen

• Hawaiian Hawk

Wildlife of Idaho

The US state of Idaho has mountains, forests, farmlands, marshes, and rivers so it is home to many different wild animals. There are over 300 animal species living in the forests and around 100 species of fish making their homes in the rivers and streams in this state.

Among the best-known wild animals in Idaho are grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, wolverines, wildcats, Cooper’s hawks, native white sturgeons, and prairie rattlesnakes

There are a lot of large mammals making their homes in the mountains like grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, wildcats (mountain lions), and caribou.

There are also wolverines, coyotes, pygmy rabbits, and of course, the mountain bluebird.

On the prairies and in rocky areas there are snakes and reptiles like the western rattlesnake, North American racer, and gopher snake.

The snakes mostly prefer to be out on the prairie but where there are rocky areas you'll meet up with the desert horned lizard and the Great Basin collared lizard.

Fish in the rivers are the cutthroat trout, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, and the native white sturgeon.

Along the rivers on the shores, there are snapping turtles, partridges, blue grouse, and painted turtles.

Endangered or Vulnerable Animals in Idaho

Northern Idaho ground squirrels have a population of about 1,000 and are in danger of habitat loss due to farmland expansion. They also find it hard to compete for food with other species of ground squirrels in the region.

Kootenai River white sturgeons have been at risk since 1969. Mostly they are endangered due to habitat loss and to dam and dike construction that has caused the Kootenai River water level to drop. This affects their egg-laying activities.

Woodland caribou are decreasing in population due to changes in their mountain habitat. Among the changes are road construction and land development affecting their natural migratory habits.

The Columbia River tiger beetle is now the rarest sight in the state. Mostly due to changing water levels affecting the egg laying habits of the beetles.

Pinjoh Jay are birds with diminishing populations mostly due to habitat loss.
