Limitations Push for Creativity

Adhering within no matter how small

Limitations help with pushing for more creativity. There are those who believe in as big of a page as possible, a huge canvas, free verse poetry, and infinite word count. These limitless options can be great, but many times limitations push most for new creative displays and ideas never before seen!

Poetry Rhyme scheme, Syllable count, and stanzas

A favorite for this is definitely a haiku. The 5 7 5 we have all come to know where writers have as little amount as possible to be able to get across as much for the topic. The limits within poetry in amount of stanzas, syllables, or specific rhyme schemes allowed can help for someone to especially have to sit and think over how their poetry should present instead of just being able to write down whatever they want instantly.

Small Art Canvas or Page

When a painting or drawing only has so much room, there is extra thought into what is important to be present on the canvas. There can be more attention to detail paid on what is presented on the tiny canvas. My picture for this article is of a mini scrapbook I put together. Cutting out the tiny pieces and figuring out how they will fit within the space was a joy. I love big scrapbook pages to fill, but going smaller to tiny made extra thought into what to keep in a cut. Plus the mini stickers I got are super cute!

Less Money

Here is one that many people can relate to. Less money causing the need to gather all of your pieces yourself or find a way to get deals or cheaper substitutes of supplies. It forces you to work with what you have or go searching around for funky colors or pieces no one else though of buying. I like to get random finds for scrapbooks and use wood pieces from outside for artwork. Writing is at least a mostly free hobby, which is fantastic! Just at least need some paper and a pen! There is studying and enjoyment of writing too. Access to reading books is where libraries come in for the win. Love the little free libraries many communities have added outside for book trades!

Word Count Limit

Short stories can be fantastic for getting to a point quicker or sitting to think about what wording is most necessary. Using the patience and time to assess what is needed for the story line and what is just random filler or doesn't do anything to really add to the story can make for a greater writing work. It forces writers to think about the exact pacing to their piece and what is best to add or take away for the sake of the characters or scene they are trying to present to the audience.

Contest Rules and Self Limits

When entering any work of art into a contest, there usually is rules of some kind. There can be many or some but most of the time there is at least a topic like horror, nature, love, etc. These are needed for what can and cannot make it to become either a winner of an actual prize or accolades for the effort. This also causes writers and artists of any kind to have to be able to output for the specific topic that may make them possibly have to be creative outside of their usual comfort zone. Creatives will be going within the limits of a new medium that can output what they wouldn't normally put a brush, scissors, or pen to. It is enjoyable seeing the limitless art every day, but I like to put specific limits on myself to see the creativity in what happens. I believe that many great artists should have a moment with limits to create for themselves. Happy creating!
