"Las Meninas" (1656) by Diego Velázquez - Source: Wikipedia

Painted in 1656, Las Meninas is one of the most iconic and recognizable artworks in the world. Velázquez seems to ask a profound question: Does art mirror life or is it the other way around?

Infanta Margarita Theresa might have known the answer...

The waiting:

a regal chiaroscuro

many witnesses.

Congratulations on runner-up! Would you believe I first encountered Velázquez through Elizabeth Borton de Treviño's book for older children, "I, Juan de Pareja," which I read in school? It was exactly what it sounds like, a fictionalized biography of de Pareja, hopelessly outdated in its sentiments even at the time of publication (1966). A bizarre introduction to one of the greatest painters of all time, but I'm glad I read it when I did!

Congrats on making the shortlist with such a unique entry! I've never seen this painting before, interesting how they had 'meta' elements of the painter and paintings in a painting, back then too.
