Marjorie Christina Luna, better known as Christy, was a bubbly 8-year-old girl from Greenacres, Florida. She had a slight speech impediment and difficulty hearing. Christy’s parents were divorced, and she lived with her mother, Jennie Johnson, and older sister, Allison.
Around 2:30 PM on May 27, 1984, Christy walked to Belk’s General Store two blocks from her home and bought cat food for her newborn kittens, Boo Boo and Skeeter.
In the meantime, Jennie and Allison were napping because the family had taken a road trip the night before. At 8:30 PM, Allison awoke and realized Christy had not returned home. Half an hour later, she woke up her mother and alerted her.
They called Christy’s friends and knocked on neighbors’ doors. With no luck, they reported her missing to the police. According to authorities, Christy may have been at the store playing video games or at the nearby park as late as 6 PM. Barefoot, the young girl was wearing only a turquoise bodysuit.
Despite extensive searches, Christy has never been found. Several child molesters lived in the area, but authorities couldn’t find concrete evidence to charge any of them. The missing girl’s father lived out of state and is not a suspect.
Willis and Chuck Rambo
Brothers Willis and Chuck Rambo lived just a few houses up from Christy. While authorities were interviewing the missing girl’s friends, they discovered both men were molesting a 6-year-old girl.
Christy did visit their house several times, but it’s unclear if she was also a victim. The brothers denied any involvement in her disappearance.
A judge deemed the 6-year-old girl’s statements inadmissible in court, and the charges were dropped. However, they did plead guilty to a lesser charge of lewd assault and were sentenced to ten years probation.
Willis would later be sentenced to four life terms for molesting his stepdaughters. Meanwhile, Chuck is not a registered sex offender as the registry program was only implemented in 1994. As of 2019, he lived in Tennessee.
Victor Wonyetye Jr.
Victor had a history of sexual assault and lived near Christy. He moved to New Hampshire shortly after she vanished, and within a few months, he became a suspect in the disappearance of 8-year-old Tammy Belanger.
He did end up in prison for robbery, where he reportedly told 8 to 12 inmates he abducted, raped, and killed Christy and Tammy. Victor denied having confessed when questioned by authorities. He was released from prison in 2012 and died eight months later.
While under surveillance by police in Greenacres, Victor was caught peering into the bedroom windows of young girls and masturbating.
William Ferris
William was neighbors with a close friend of Christy’s. Their homes were en route to the store she visited before she vanished. Christy may have stopped by her friend’s house, though they were not home.
He initially denied knowing the missing girl but later admitted he did because his wife often babysat Christy’s friend. As the girls played one day, he reportedly told his wife one of them could disappear and never be found.
William moved to Virginia within a year of Christy’s disappearance. He was arrested for child molestation in 2010 and sentenced to life in prison.
In 2019, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw received what he called “one of the best and most credible leads that we have got to date to solve this case.” Officials dug up a yard across the street from where Christy was last seen and where neighborhood kids were known to play. Only non-human bones were found.
Jennie moved out of the Greenacres home after her daughter went missing but has since returned. She has several grandchildren and never lets them out of her sight, not even to ride their bicycles around the block.
Christy Luna has been missing for 39 years. If alive, she is now 47 years old.
