In a landmark ruling, a Jamaican court has overturned artist Vybz Kartel’s conviction by privy council. Previously, he wouldn’t have been able to taste liberty (or come close to it) until 2046. Now, it seems that he will move ever closer to being a free man, depending on the outcome due to alleged jury misconduct. “Juror X” brought out the bribery allegations. The court officials looked into this and said that the juror in question should not have been present during the trial.

Vybz Kartel may have a shot at strolling the streets of Jamaica eating plantains and Golden Krust beef patties with a Red Stripe beer. He might have the opportunity to bring his mind to the fore again as one of the most gifted lyricists in the game right now. He, however, is currently in solitary confinement. A glimmer of hope for his resolution with the State to grant him access again to the outside world still hangs over him like a noose.

What’s sad is that he’s already spent close to thirteen years in prison. Possibly, he will see restitution for his stint in the penal system. His debt to society has been paid in folds especially if he is found not guilty and released.

It will be a bittersweet trial depending on either way. That bright spot that gave him hope would be dashed or his triumph as a champion of the legal code may set him on a path to righteousness.

If it is a case where he can show that he did not in fact murder Clive “Lizard” Williams, it will be a wonderful entry into the annals of Jamaican law. The only thing is, he still must wait in prison to see if his appeal is certified by the judge(s).

In taking in all of this, Vybz Kartel is truly anticipating his day of emancipation. As the hours peel back, he waits to know his fate. He had previously been given a life sentence but with the reduction and the ultimate idea of the man walking free one day, Vybz Kartel, real name, Adidja Palmer, is poised to become yet another tale of a black man caught up in the criminal system. And if his name is cleared, he will have the chance to bring to the music world more gems for his supporters to savor.

To overlook the notion that he is a killer of an innocent man may be something that will be changed to Palmer not being the perpetrator of the crime. His skills on the microphone have garnered him much praise. By remaining resolute in his position as a convicted felon under Jamaican law, he just might be able to pull through on this one.

Vybz Kartel took it upon himself to do the time and not worry about anyone calling him a snitch. While it’s great to be an informant, it doesn’t matter if Palmer tells or not. The jury confusion could spell not only freedom but a payday for the time that he’s already served. This all amounts to the placement in which he finds himself. For being in prison for over a decade and to be locked up in solitary confinement, that takes a toll on the mental capacity of the inmate. He may even sue for psychological distress and other factors that go into the process of being incarcerated.

Palmer ought to have the piece of mind to recollect on his past and peer behind the curtain to his future. If he has any sense of self-esteem, he will look at the facts of the case and find them to be in his favor.
