I know how much you guys like when I bring you real-life crime cases happening all over Nigeria so we can address and talk about. Today's case is very interesting to me because there is so much to unpack, so much to discuss, and a lot of nuance to the case.

I can't wait to dive in and tell you the story and then after you finish reading, we'll discuss.

Are you ready to jump in? Then let's go!

So the question before we jump into the story is this:

Should a person be arrested for committing a crime if the victim was never in any real danger? If an 18 year old boy threatens someone with a gun but the gun he uses is not real, should he still go to jail?

Here is the case of Emmanuel Peace.

Emmanuel Peace

The police in Delta state on June 13, 2021 arrested an armed robbery suspect who specializes in using a fake wooden gun to rob his victims of their personal and valuable items. In a statement released by Edafe Bright, the acting spokesperson of the command, he states that on June 13, the Divisional Police Officer in the Okpanam Division received a distress call from a resident who claimed that an armed robber had entered into their house with a gun and forced victims who did not have cash on them to transfer money to his account.

Upon hearing the news, Edafe said that the DPO immediately deployed patrol teams to the area. According to him,

The patrol teams on getting to the scene cordoned the area, and arrested the suspect one Emmanuel Peace ‘m’ about 18yrs old with a DUMMY WOODEN GUN.

The suspect had already successfully forced an aged couple to transfer the sum of six hundred thousand Naira (N600, 000) to an account number owned by one Anwanga Abasi Nathaniel Udo. Other exhibit recovered from the suspect includes two (2) knives and one (1) torchlight.

Edafe said that an investigation into the matter continues.

The evidence found

Now that you've read the story, what do you think the punishment for this crime should be?

Some people say that because the aged couple were not really in danger and because of how young the boy is, he should only get a slap on the wrist and go off with a stern warning. Some people on the other hand say that Emmanuel should be arrested immediately because if he's already doing this with a wooden gun now, it won't take long for him to escalate and get his hands on a real gun with which he can wreck havoc.

Personally, I see sense in what both people are saying. Regardless of age, Emmanuel should not have gone to rob a family - aged couple for that matter - and even if the gun was fake, the people he robbed FELT like they were in real danger. Anything could have happened. What if the couple had a heart attack or started to run and then fell and injured themselves. He certainly needs to pay for that but at the same time do I think he should get the same full punishment as people who commit actual armed robbery with real weapons, no. I don't think so. But I could be wrong.
