Denver's medical examiner said the man and a woman found dead inside a room at the DoubleTree shelter for homeless people hotel on Saturday were shot.

The examiner ruled the deaths of Sandra Cervantes, 43, and Dustin Nunn, 38, a homicide.

Cervantes suffered one gunshot wound and Nunn died of multiple gunshot wounds, a spokesperson for the Office of the Medical Examiner said.

No further updates on the homicide investigation were available as of Wednesday, police said.

A Denver police spokesperson initially said the deaths were not the result of a shooting.

Authorities posted a $2,000 reward for anyone who can help provide information leading to the arrest of a suspect or suspects. Investigators asked those with information about the homicides to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867.

The hotel-turned shelter at 4040 Quebec Street serves hundreds of homeless people.

Between August and January, Denver authorities acquired five hotels and converted them into shelters, a key strategy for the Johnston administration, which moved 1,135 people out of the city's streets before 2023 ended.


Denver approved the lease-purchase agreement for the DoubleTree hotel for $83,333.33 a month for up to 15 months, with the option to purchase the 289-room hotel for up to $43 million at any time during the lease.

An LLC associated with Rocky Mountain Communities purchased the hotel, located just south of I-70 and nestled in a pocket of open space, for $39 million on Nov. 28, according to property records. The nonprofit is leasing the property to the city and serves as its landlord.

The Salvation Army is under a $10 million contract with the city to operate the DoubleTree.

Between Oct. 1 and Jan. 12, Denver Police dispatchers fielded 1,212 emergency 911 calls from the hotel and area within 1,000 meters of it, according to Department of Public Safety data obtained by The Denver Gazette.

The calls included shootings, suspected illegal drug use, theft, assaults and other reported acts of violence.

Aurora Police officers arrested three suspects in connection to a fatal shooting and pursuit that ended with the suspects' vehicle getting stuck in the snow.

Cameron Mooty, 31, Stephan Cherry, 32, and Corey Allen, 26, were arrested on Friday morning following a shooting in the 14600 block of East Second Avenue. The three suspects face charges of second-degree murder, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

Police responded to a report of a shooting at the condominium complex around 3 a.m. Friday. Upon arrival, officers found 24-year-old Theresa Burke suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officers performed lifesaving actions, but she later died on the scene. She was identified by the Adams County Coroner's Office on Tuesday.

Mooty, Cherry and Allen fled the scene in a moving truck, according to the department. Officers pursued the vehicle ruck until it stopped near E-470 and Pena Boulevard, when the truck became stuck in the snow.

Officers "quickly" detained the three suspects, according to the release. Mooty had suffered a gunshot wound during the incident, but it's unclear when or how the injury occurred.

Cherry and Allen were arrested on the the way back on utstanding felony warrants while Mooty was transported to a nearby hospital. The two were later booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder charges Mooty and the things that might use

Mooty will be booked on the same charges following his release from the hospital, police said.


"Several" firearms were seized from the truck after the incident, the department said. The Major Crime Homicide Unit's investigation continues.
