It was just another cold winter’s night, a young couple sat by the fire, enjoying each other’s company. Sitting in silence, wrapped in each other's arms in a blanket, they felt as if they could sit there for the rest of their lives.

But like every peaceful moment, it comes to an abrupt end. A baby could be heard from the upstairs nursery. The young woman got out of her husband’s embrace and quickly scurried upstairs to check on her son. She walked over to the baby’s crib and picked him up instantly calming him down. Right as she was laying him down she heard a loud crashing sound coming from the living room where her husband was.

“Mark?” She called out, after walking out of the nursery. Not hearing an answer, she quietly ran down the stairs and peered around the corner. Gasping in horror, she sees her husband struggling with an intruder. She ran as fast as her legs could manage, up the stairs and back to the nursery, grabbing the twins and hiding them in a closet on top of a blanket.

Leaving them there, she crept back downstairs, pulling her cell phone out and calling the police.

“911, what is your emergency?” The 911 operator answered in a matter of seconds.

“There is an intruder in my house,” the woman whispered shakily, peeking around the corner, she could see the intruder creeping into the kitchen, her husband unmoving on the livingroom floor. Fearing the worst, she dropped her phone, running to the man on the floor.

“Mark?” She shook him slightly, hoping he would wake up. “Mark! Mark, please wake up.” Her voice trembled as tears trailed down her face in distress of her husband. Distracted, the intruder heard the woman, wasting no time to grab the object closest to him and striking her on the head, rendering her unconscious. Successfully subduing the residence, the stranger continues through the small home in search of the nursery. Not seeing the two infants the stranger searches before a noise coming from the closet grabs their attention. Creeping over towards the cracked door, the intruder sees the twins lying there, staring with big innocent eyes. Grabbing the pair the stranger disappears into the night. No sign of an intrusion, other than the young couple unconscious and unaware of the missing twins.

After losing their children, the parents spent years searching for their children, only moving on after ten years of no luck. They only had one more child, a daughter, after the home invasion. They lived in constant fear of losing their baby girl after that traumatic event.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

“Mark!” The mother called out to her husband.

“Yes, sweetheart?” He walked into the living room.

“Could you answer the phone, Lizzy just fell asleep.” The husband nodded going into the kitchen and answering the phone.

“Hello, Mr. Barns. This is Sheriff Collins, we found you kids,” the man spoke from the other end of the line. Dropping the phone the parents rushed to leave for the police station. They hoped that they finally had a chance to hold their babies once again.

This is one of my favorite works I have ever written. I don’t normally write something in this genre but I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone of only writing fantasy, to write something of a more serious topic, more realistic topic but still with something happening that happens less than we would all like to give the family a little bit of a happy ending. This is definitely very different and I hope you enjoyed reading this.
