On December 11, 2013, during a snowstorm in Voorhees, New Jersey, Charlette James Dawkins entered the world. She was born to Caitlyn Royen and Anthony Dawkins, with her middle name chosen to honor her maternal grandfather, James. With an older stepbrother and the exciting news of soon becoming a big sister, Charlette's future seemed bright. She imagined dressing her potential baby sister in fancy dresses and bows, just like herself.

Charlette, with her long blonde curls, blue eyes, and radiant smile, was often described as the glue of her family. Her grandmother, Renee Rodriguez, fondly called her "Tiny but so mighty." Various family members had special nicknames for her: "Na's baby" from her grandma, "little babe" from her aunt, and "seaweb" from her grandfather, Javier Rodriguez. Charlette adored princesses and superheroes alike. She loved tiaras, Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and her favorite color, pink. She had a special fondness for tutus, big bows, snacks, and jalapeno Pringles, which she enjoyed sharing with her grandfather. Her favorite song was "You Are My Sunshine."

Despite her young age, Charlette was a caring and joyful child, beloved by her extended family. Her infectious laugh and kindness made her unforgettable. Caitlyn, her mother, was part of a large blended family. After Caitlyn's parents split, her mother, Renee, remarried, bringing more siblings into Caitlyn's life. This blended family environment played a significant role in shaping Charlette’s loving and caring nature.

In 2012, Caitlyn began dating Anthony, and at 18, she gave birth to Charlette. Caitlyn's sister, Kiren, was not only Charlette's aunt but also her godmother, forming a close bond with the newborn. Caitlyn and Anthony struggled as a couple and eventually broke up in 2014, with Anthony rarely visiting his daughter. This strained relationship left Caitlyn to navigate single motherhood with the support of her extended family.

By 2016, Caitlyn started dating Travis Graham and moved in with him, despite the unusual living situation involving Travis's ex-girlfriend and her son. This unconventional arrangement raised eyebrows within the family, and tensions began to mount. Allegations arose about Caitlyn's neglect and mistreatment of Charlette, further complicated by Travis's criminal background and substance abuse issues. He had multiple convictions, including a violent offense as a juvenile.

Travis proposed to Caitlyn in early 2017. Despite their seemingly happy facade, there were signs of trouble. Charlette showed unusual injuries, raising suspicions of abuse. Caitlyn, blinded by her relationship with Travis, dismissed these concerns, attributing them to accidents and childhood clumsiness. However, the family grew increasingly worried about Charlette’s well-being.

On March 13, 2017, Caitlyn left Charlette at home with Travis. Later that day, he brought Charlette to the hospital, severely injured and unconscious. Travis claimed she had fallen, but the extent of her injuries told a different story. Despite efforts to save her, Charlette succumbed to her injuries, revealing a history of abuse that had gone unnoticed or unaddressed for too long.

Travis's inconsistent stories and the evidence on Charlette's body led to his arrest and charges of homicide. The investigation revealed a pattern of abuse that Charlette had endured, painting a heartbreaking picture of her final days. Travis eventually confessed to hitting Charlette, causing her fatal fall. In June 2018, he pled guilty to aggravated manslaughter and robbery, receiving a 30-year sentence.

Charlette's short life left a profound impact on everyone who knew her. Her family grieved deeply and created Charlette's Voice, a community to honor her memory and support related causes. The organization aimed to raise awareness about child abuse and provide resources for families in need. Through this initiative, Charlette's legacy continued to touch lives and bring about positive change.

Kirsten, her godmother, played a pivotal role in keeping Charlette's memory alive. She believed that Charlette's spirit watched over them, providing comfort and strength. Kirsten shared stories and memories of Charlette, ensuring that her presence remained palpable in their lives. One of her favorite memories was of Charlette popping out of a tent and saying, "Tada!" It was a moment of pure joy and innocence, reflecting the vibrant spirit that Charlette embodied.

Charlette's story is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable children and the enduring love of a family. It underscores the need for vigilance, compassion, and action in the face of potential abuse. Her life, though tragically short, continues to inspire efforts to safeguard other children and support families through difficult times.

In remembering Charlette James Dawkins, we honor her joyful spirit, her love for life, and the indelible mark she left on those who loved her. Her story calls us to action, urging us to create a world where every child is safe, cherished, and given the chance to thrive.
