The Voice from the Grave: A Murder Solved by a Ghost

A chilling true story of Teresita Basa, whose mysterious messages led police to her killer years after her death.

In the history of criminal investigations, there are cases that challenge logic, science, and even the law itself. Most murder mysteries are solved through evidence, witnesses, and detective work. But what happens when none of those exist? What if the only witness is the victim herself—speaking from beyond the grave?

This is the chilling true story of a murder that baffled police, shocked the public, and became known as "The Voice from the Grave."

A Promising Life Cut Short

In 1977, Teresita Basa, a talented and hardworking woman originally from the Philippines, was living in Chicago, USA. She had moved there to pursue higher education and eventually worked as a respiratory therapist at a local hospital.

Teresita was known as a kind, intelligent, and independent woman. She loved music, especially playing the piano, and spent her free time teaching children. Though she lived alone, she was happy and focused on her career.

On the evening of February 21, 1977, Teresita spoke with a friend on the phone. During the conversation, she mentioned that someone was expected to visit her apartment later that evening. It would be the last conversation she ever had.

A Horrifying Discovery

Around 8:30 PM, neighbors noticed smoke coming from Teresita’s apartment. Firefighters arrived quickly and managed to extinguish the flames.

What they found inside was horrifying.

Wrapped inside a burning carpet was the body of Teresita Basa. She had been stabbed in the chest, and her apartment appeared to have been ransacked. At first, investigators suspected robbery and possibly sexual assault. However, the autopsy revealed that she had not been assaulted.

Police searched for clues, interviewed friends, coworkers, and neighbors, but nothing led them to a suspect. The case slowly grew cold.

A Strange Letter

During the investigation, detectives discovered a note in Teresita’s apartment that mentioned someone whose name began with the letter "A." Unfortunately, they had no idea who this person was.

Weeks turned into months, and still there were no answers.

Then something unbelievable happened.

The Message from Beyond

A Filipino doctor named Dr. Jose Chua contacted police and claimed he had information about the murder.

The detective handling the case was skeptical but agreed to listen.

Dr. Chua explained that his wife had recently begun behaving strangely. While asleep, she would speak in a different voice and claim to be Teresita Basa.

According to Dr. Chua, the mysterious voice revealed shocking details about the murder.

The voice said that the killer was a man named Allan Showery, a hospital employee who had visited Teresita’s apartment to repair her television.

The voice further claimed that after killing her, Allan stole her jewelry and later gave it to his girlfriend.

At first, this sounded absurd. No detective wanted to believe a ghost story. However, the case had gone nowhere, so they decided to verify the information.

Following the Clues

Investigators checked whether Teresita had experienced problems with her television around the time of her death.

She had.

They then looked into Allan Showery and discovered that he worked at the same hospital as Teresita.

Next, detectives visited Allan’s girlfriend. During questioning, they discovered jewelry in her possession that matched items belonging to Teresita Basa.

Friends and family members of Teresita positively identified the jewelry.

Suddenly, the impossible story was producing real evidence.

The Case Against Allan

Police arrested Allan Showery and questioned him extensively.

However, there was a problem.

Although the information provided through Dr. Chua’s wife had led detectives to important evidence, a court could not accept testimony from a ghost as legal proof.

Allan admitted possessing the jewelry but denied committing murder. His defense argued that he had received the items while Teresita was still alive.

Without direct evidence connecting him to the killing, prosecutors struggled to build a solid case.

Eventually, Allan was released.

It seemed as though the case might remain unsolved forever.

An Unexpected Confession

Then, just when everyone thought the investigation was over, something extraordinary happened.

Before his release became final, Allan suddenly changed his story.

In front of witnesses, he confessed.

He admitted that on the night of February 21, 1977, he had gone to Teresita’s apartment to repair her television. While there, he noticed valuables and decided to steal them.

When Teresita caught him in the act, panic took over.

Allan confessed that he strangled her, stabbed her, and then attempted to make the crime look like something else. He removed her clothing, wrapped her body in a carpet, set the carpet on fire, and fled the scene.

His confession matched details that had never been publicly released.

Justice at Last

With the confession in hand, prosecutors finally had the evidence they needed.

Allan Showery was convicted and sentenced to prison.

The case became one of the most famous and controversial murder investigations in American history.

Even the detectives involved admitted that they could not explain how Dr. Chua’s wife knew details that only the killer would have known.

Mystery or Miracle?

Was it really the spirit of Teresita Basa speaking through another person?

Was it a strange coincidence?

Or was there some explanation that science has yet to understand?

No one knows for certain.

What remains undeniable is that a cold murder case was solved after information emerged from a source that seemed impossible.

To this day, the story of Teresita Basa remains one of the most fascinating mysteries ever recorded—a case where justice may have been delivered by a voice from beyond the grave.
