John Green, 36, lived in Branksome, Dorset in a basement flat that his mother owned. On Saturday the 2nd of February 1991, John's fiancée, Lori de Carteret went to visit John at his home. On entry, she found his dead body. John was slumped between a window and a desk, he had been repeatedly stabbed. The police believe that John was killed the previous afternoon, sometime between 3.15 pm and 4 pm.

The week before John's death, on Saturday the 26th of January 1991, John held a birthday party at his flat for his friend Jude. About 50 people attended this party. This caused the police a problem during their investigation as it made fingerprinting difficult inside the flat.

John kept a diary of his whereabouts. On Tuesday the 29th of January, John wrote that he had a meeting at The Little Chef café along the A33 in Heckfield, 89 miles north of Basingstoke. Nobody knew who John met here or the purpose of the meeting.

On Thursday the 31st of January, John purchased some goods from a typewriter shop in Westbourne. He charged the goods to his credit card, but we do not know what he purchased or why. According to the Daily Echo, John was in the process of setting up a marine security company, so the goods could have been for his new business.

That same day, a neighbour of John's heard shouting through the wall. She heard a woman threaten to knife the man, whom she assumed was John. She looked through the window and caught a glimpse of a woman leaving John's flat. Above John's flat was a vacant shop that John's mother also owned. That evening, a neighbour heard shouting and banging coming from the shop.

The following day, John was seen out and about. Witnesses that saw John said that he was quite cheerful and seemed upbeat. That afternoon, at approximately 3 pm, another witness saw someone that matched John's description involved in an altercation with 2 men outside his shop. The witness, who contacted the police via a letter, said that John, if it was him, looked pale and frightened. This was the last sighting of John alive.

The first of the two men that the witness saw was described as being about 20–24 years of age, about 5 foot 10 inches, he was wearing light faded blue jeans with a dark blue top. His hair was dirty blonde or auburn with blonde highlights. The second man was around 40 years of age, well built, around 5 foot 10 inches tall with dark hair and stubble. He was wearing brown trousers with a light brown zip-up top.

That same evening, a witness said that as she got off the bus outside John's flat, she saw a man coming out of the door of John's door. This man got on the bus that the lady had just alighted. The man was said to have been about 6 foot tall, 35–45, large build, he was wearing denim jeans and a thick dark green jumper. The bus driver said that two men got on the bus at this stop. However, the lady only saw one.

John was said to be a very gentle and quiet man and the police could not find a motive for the attack. He was not the sort of person that would look for trouble and he was not confrontational.

In 2014, police re-opened John's case, but no arrests were made.  As of September 2022, John's case remains unsolved.
