I have made mistakes in my life. I will have regret the decisions I’ve made. I shouldn’t have done some things, and yet I did it without taking others into consideration. I was selfish and wrong.

And for that, I will cease to exist.

Martha Callis.

The letter was on a lamp on the night stand, a paper clip pinning it to the lamp shade.

Beside the nightstand, sat the body. With one shot to the center entering her mouth exploding the direct back of her skull. Removing most of her face.

The pistol lie on her lap with both hands on the trigger. She was sitting upright in an accent chair.

Blood splatter all over the walls, and specs on the letter.

The crime scene struck many flags with Detective Graves. One being the crossed out word in the letter and the other, the background check that was ran on the woman. The woman had recently wired an amount of 100k to an unknown source which led the detectives to believe this may now be a staged suicide.

When it comes to suicide cases, the first thing is to rule out if the act was indeed intentional or accidental.

Crossing off any investigations about the persons life before confirming any reason of death relating to a suicide.

Did Mrs.Callis have any bad relationships, or bad-blood with anyone that you may have been aware of?”

“What was her daily activity like?”

“Was she depressed? Take any medications? Ingest drugs on a daily basis?” Questioned Detective Julia Banks.

“I DONT KNOW! …WHAT?! NO -sh, she, never used drugs. I mean, nothing other than the occasional recreation…she wasn’t the happiest person, but who is?!” Allison Callis sobbed in defense of her sister.

“Is there a reason she’d kill herself in a hotel?”

Hesitating and thinking hard…

“My sister…was, lonely. She would take trips alone. So, maybe she was feeling adventurous? One minute she was fine, and the next, I received the concerning texts with her location marked to this hotel…. motel” sobbing even harder.

Detective Graves entered the crime scene. In complete silence he preceded the body and observed for a few minutes.

“Detective Graves, the letter is over on the lamp shade,” Detective Banks motioned. Waiting to hear Detective Graves thoughts on the matter.

Without glancing in either direction, his eyes were fixed upon the body.

Impending a bit closer he squatted before the deceased woman, getting a closer look at what’s left of the woman’s face.

“I think I’m gonna be sick” Detective Graves swiftly withdrew.

“Sir are you alright? Ive never seen you queasy before” questioned Detective Banks.

“I had a late lunch.” His throat bobbed.

“Who’s the broad?” continuing his observations.

“The victims sister, Sir. She found her after receiving random empty text messages.”

“This wasn’t a suicide. Have forensics take the body and the ammunition for finger printing. And the letter.”

“How do you know it’s not a suicide?” asked Detective Banks.

“There’s a 100k wire involved. It’s never a suicide.” Shifting up and turning towards the exit.

At this point Detective Graves was more concerned with a robbery at hand and who the attackers next prospect was.

Late Hours

Few days later researching late hours in his office, an email popped up that labeled “Callis Case:DNA”. It was the results of the prints on the pen and the written letter.

The results showed they were indeed Martha Callis’ finger prints.

Reading the letter over and over. He first suspects the crossed out word from will to have as in forgetting it’s not in the third person.

The letter acts almost as a bit impenitent. The way the victim talks about herself can very well mirror someonelses feelings, slightly changing it from “you” to “ I” staging the victim.

As for the wired transfer, it was transferred to an unknown source. There was no name, account number, that even the FBI could crack, at least just yet. These sorts of things take time, and loop-holes to jump through, even for the FBI as we don’t have total permission in the investigation or enough proof just yet. Though, the team is working hard on getting approvals for all of that.

Phone rings:

“Honey are you working late again, dinner is on the stove, and Jackson is asking for you, he keeps saying it’s your turn for story time.” Detectives Graves wife initiated.

“Hey, Sweetheart, yea, I’m working late again. Trying to figure out this case with the suicide. I’ll be home in an hour. Don’t wait up.”

“I never do, love you!”

“Oh and tell Jackson we’ll do Italian ice tomorrow, I love you.”

“He’s gonna hold you to it. See you soon.”

A Plausible Suicide

The next day Detective Graves received a call that they were able to break the code and retrieve the password of the account to where the funds were wired.

“Sir we have a lead.”

“I’ll be right in.”

Back at the office bright and early, they discovered the victim Martha had wired the funds to a charity, under the name of “SBW Charities” with an address of location listed as,

Shelter for Battered Women

624 Cresent Dr S.

Boulder City , NV

“Sir, maybe this is just an innocent suicide after all, and this would explain the bruises across her abdomen and the broken ribs. Maybe, Martha endured abuse, and wanted to give 100k to other battered women before taking her own life. This would be a plausible explanation” stated Detective Julia Banks.

“Although, I still can’t find any source of essential income other than a few hotel jobs in her resume, which is concerning, she must’ve had one heck of a savings.”

“Maybe so…I’m gonna go check it out.”

“Would you like back up?”

“That won’t be necessary since this is leaning more toward your thesis and ruling out a robbery. I’ll call if I see anything unusual.”

Arriving on scene to the location of SBW Charities, Detective Graves pulls off to the side noticing there’s nothing but an abandon building. An empty facility that is in desperate need of rehabilitation.

Picking up the radio to call for criminal investigation officers, he holds the talk button down and then releases after spotting a black Range Rover parked. He knows this vehicle and the model all too well. In fact, well enough to know that he bought it.

Walking over to the Rover he sees two people shake hands and depart.

Grace Graves get into the vehicle.

Calling off the investigation

“Sir, did you try to channel us? How’s everything at the scene?”

“Everything’s fine. Nothing to see. Just an abandon building. It appears Martha had plans she never started.”

Eyes fixed solely on his wife’s vehicle hanging up the radio, slowly pulling off following behind. Grace pulls into a bank. Then shortly there-after, following her back home.

Entering the house Grace fumbles through a wad of paperwork, turning around, startling herself at the sight of Rick Graves,

“JESU—- !!” Dropping the papers everywhere.

“Rick! I wasn’t expecting you home so early,” nervously approaching for a kiss, but before she could take her second step he intercedes.

“Why were you at the address of the empty building today?”

Pausing eye to eye, taking in his question realizing he had followed her, she lets out a smooth chuckle.

“Did you crack the case?” Grace sarcastically grimaced.

Detective Graves remains stone-faced and unamused.

“What, you think I didn’t know?” She blurted.

Pulling out of her satchel a handful of receipts, then throwing them at him as they fly everywhere.

Kneeling down, Detective Graves picks up one of the receipts and then another and another, his head towards the floor.

  • $4000 at Château
  • $75000 at Red Rocks Resort /Casino & Suites, Las Vegas and Gentleman’s club.
  • A bank statement check receipt of a 15k check deposited to Martha Callis.

“How’d you…”

“I was Only taking back what was mine, Rick. The total of 100k of OUR MONEY you trashed on some starlight trashy high-end escort who goes by the name of ‘Calesie’ but checks made out to “Martha Callis.”

“For a Chief detective you sure just leave your things lying around and open on your laptop for others to see. Luckily, Jackson can’t read yet.”

Swallowing hard, Detective Graves realizes the case is coming to its end.

“You committed a murder” he replied mildly, despite of all the things she said, keeping his composure.

Throwing her head back in a clever laugh, then back to his eyes dropping her smile, she answered, “No, no no. You did” handing over another wad of paperwork along with an envelope.

The paperwork header was the building purchased for SWB Charities and Detective Rick Graves name listed as owner.

“You’ll never get away with this” he said in a monotone voice.

“Oh yea? Why don’t you look for yourself.” Nodding her head to the envelope in his hands.

“Go on.”

Not taking his eyes off her, he slowly pulls out whatever was awaiting in the envelope.

Sliding out undercover photos of his and Martha’s crazy little Ron-de-vu in Vegas.

Flipping to the next photo, it’s photos of Martha tied up being gagged and mascara running down her face.

Looking up at Grace, he said gravely, “ you know escorts enjoy this…she asked for this, I didn’t…”

Cutting him off, “I assume she enjoyed that one too” motioning to the next picture.

As he flipped to next photo. Martha was beaten so badly in the face and lying on the ground in a parking garage.

“WHO TOOK THESE GRACE! IF YOU DONT TELL ME IM GON….”

“Gonna what? Gonna kill me?” She smirked.

“JACKSON!!” Detective Graves calls out for his son in the house.

“Oh he’s staying at Jaces.”

“Grace” he stammers, calmly then abruptly,

“WHAT DID YOU DO!”

“What did I do!?”

“You mean WHAT DID YOU DO! That’s what the whole FBI will be asking here shortly when your name appears on the lease of the lovely charity you just opened”

“So generous and selfless of you.”

“You think framing me for the murder you committed is gonna send me away forever?!”

Grace glances down, then looking back at him with no remorse, “once they find that the charity doesn’t exist and it’s only used as a cover up to receive funds from Martha’s account, with your name as owner…Yes, yes I do.”

Whoaaaa, Grace is such a badass and I aspire to be her! Ngl, I kinda suspected Grace when she called Rick to ask if he's working late again and got my suspicions confirmed when Rick spotted Grace at the abandoned building. But you got me good when you revealed what a cheating asshole Rick is! This whodunit was so well done!
