The sun had just set behind the city skyline as Detective John Taylor arrived at the scene of the crime. The apartment building on 3rd Avenue was a quiet and peaceful place, but tonight it was anything but. The body of a young woman had been found in one of the units, and John was determined to find out what had happened.

He stepped inside the building and was immediately met by a group of officers who were securing the area. John approached the lead officer and introduced himself. "What do we have?" he asked.

The officer turned to him and pointed to the second-floor apartment. "Victim's name is Emily Parker. She's 25 years old. Neighbors reported hearing a loud argument coming from her apartment earlier tonight. One of them went to check on her and found her dead."

John nodded and made his way up to the apartment. The door was open, and he could see several officers inside, taking photos and collecting evidence. He stepped inside and was immediately struck by the scene before him. Emily Parker was lying on the floor, her eyes open and staring at the ceiling. Her clothes were torn, and there were bruises on her arms and face.

John knelt down beside her and examined the body. There were no signs of a struggle, and no weapon had been used. He stood up and turned to the officer in charge. "What do we know about Emily Parker?"

The officer consulted his notes. "She was a waitress at a nearby café. Lived alone in this apartment. No criminal record. We're still waiting on the coroner's report, but it looks like she was strangled."

John nodded and looked around the apartment. It was sparsely furnished, with just a bed, a dresser, and a small kitchenette. He opened the dresser drawer and found a stack of bills, all past due. "Looks like she was having some financial troubles," he said to the officer.

He continued to search the apartment, looking for any clues as to what might have happened. In the kitchenette, he found a half-empty bottle of wine and two glasses, one of which had lipstick stains on it. He bagged them for evidence.

As John was leaving the apartment, he saw Emily Parker's neighbor standing in the hallway. "Can I ask you a few questions?" John said.

The neighbor nodded and stepped closer. "Did you hear anything unusual tonight?" John asked.

The neighbor shook her head. "No, not really. Just a lot of yelling and screaming. I thought it was just another fight between Emily and her boyfriend."

"Boyfriend?" John asked.

The neighbor nodded. "Yeah, they fought a lot. He was always coming over and causing trouble. I haven't seen him around lately, though."

John jotted down the information and thanked the neighbor. He headed back to the station to start piecing together the case. As he sat down at his desk, he began to sift through the evidence.

The financial troubles suggested that Emily had some motive to take part in criminal activities. He ran a background check on her and found out that she had been arrested for shoplifting several years ago. It was a possibility that she could be involved in something illegal to earn some extra money.

The wine bottle and glasses suggested that there had been someone else in the apartment. John contacted the café where Emily worked and found out that she had been seeing a regular customer named Mark. He quickly ran a check on him and found out that he had a criminal record for domestic violence.

As John continued to investigate, he pieced together a picture of what had happened that night. Emily Parker had been having financial difficulties and had turned to criminal activities to help make ends meet. She had been involved with Mark, who had likely been the on.
