Klara Maureova was born in Kurim, Czech slovakia, in 1975. As a teenager, Klara struggled with depression and mental health problems. Growing up, she always thought she had been chosen to serve a God-ordained mission. Her younger sister Katerina, had the same mentality as her sister had, they both were always together planning grand things for the future. At the age of 20, Klara went on to study at a university, but was never able to free herself from her pseudo-religious fixations. It wasn’t long before she managed to be independent, going to live together with a man, Klara got pregnant with her first child. Within the marriage, Klara gave birth to two boys named Ondrej and Jakub.

Due to Klara’s violent and unhealthy behavior, the marriage did not last long. After the separation, she was left alone with the children. Despite her eccentricities, she was a good mother; she spent enough time with her children, she loved and cared for them. However, loneliness was taking over her. Klara sought out her sister Katerina, and went to live with her and her nephews.

A new friend

Klara and Katerina met Barbora Skrlová, 33, who was studying at the same university as Katerina. This woman had a rare disease: her appearance was of a twelve-year-old girl and she constantly took advantage of this peculiar fact to pass herself off as a minor, thus escaping from troubled situations and legal actions. Barbora was even adopted by a couple, who thought she was a young girl. (Hence the idea for the film “The Orphan”) With a violent and dubious character, Barbora began to undergo psychiatric treatment, was also hospitalized, but managed to escape with ease.

The presence of Barbora Skrlová in Klara and Katerina’s lives changed everything. Their personalities (which were not really the best, with all the disturbed thoughts and etc,) were completely revived by their new friend. According to statements by the psychiatrist Zdenek Basný, who who got to examine the changes in the identity of the woman with the appearance of a young girl, and peculiar aspects, lead the doctor to conclude that Barbora also suffered from mental disorder behaviors. He said that The whole story of Barbora Skrlova was surrounded by an enigma in which she participated in estrangement. There is no clear explanation, but his hypothesis was that she had a severe psychic distortion with identity disturbance.

Under the influence of Barbora, the sisters agreed to be apart of a cult called the Grail cult, which they claimed to have followers in England, as well as hundreds of people around the world. This scripture-based movement was created between 1923 and 1988 by the German Oskar Ernst Bernhardt when he took up residence in Vomperberg, Tyrol (Austria) in 1928, in order to focus on the writing of his major work “In the Light of Truth” — The Grail Message. All the actions and strange activities done by the cult was based off the back of the message in the holy grail, in which it was stated that man can thrive by doing good things on earth.

One of the group’s rules was that its followers were free from social taboos such as incest, cannibalism and murder. All received orders from an unknown leader who called himself “The Doctor”. He communicated with his followers only through text messages sent to their cell phones. “The Doctor” supported slavery, child abuse and sexual promiscuity, in a libertarian sense.

More than an act of cruelty

Thanks to Barbora’s influence, Klara shaved her hair and eyebrows. She dressed in rags and stopped showering. Her sister Katerina supported all of Klara and Barbora’s actions. Furthermore, Barbora behaved in a double weird way: Sometimes she acted as a grown woman, but with some behaviors of a young girl who didn’t know what she was doing. In her head, Barbora thought that Klara belonged to her, and was really jealous of Klara”s relationship with her children.

Barabora started to fill Klaras head with allegations against the children, saying that their behavior weren’t normal and that they should be punished for it. She accused them of committing mischief, and destroying everything they had. With all the allegations and brainwashing caused by Barbora, Klara agreed to punish her own children. However, Barbora had everything already planned, and she took control of the whole situation to elaborate her crazy horrible plan. She convinced Klara to put her children in a cage, where they would be in all day long.

The cage was ordered from a local blacksmith (who did not suspect anything). They put it in the attic of the house. Which seemed very natural to Klara and Katerine; and it was through the bars that the boys would get food. They didn’t know, but they would remain there for more than a year.

Barbora was the main character in the whole story. She would be the one giving further instructions, which the sisters followed to the letter. She was the one stating how the children should be tortured. They were burned with cigarettes on their arms and legs, they were tied up and gagged when they had visitors, They were frequently beaten and given electric shocks through the cage’s iron bars.

The women whipped them with whips and drowned them, while keeping they naked all the time and poured cold water on them once a week, this was the only thing close to hygiene the boy would have. They had to sleep on the floor, without covers, along with their urine and excrement. Sometimes the women would give them something to eat. If they cried, they were hit and electrocuted through the bars.

It was never enough

And out of the blue, Barbora had an idea, to feed the boys abundantly. After a couple of days. when they’d gained some weight, the sisters and Barbora decided to cut pieces of the boy’s bodies. Klara, with the knife, ripped off pieces of her children flesh, the boys screamed in pain and agony. After cutting several pieces, the three ate it right there in front of them, not caring about the screams and pain of the little boys. Barbora asked for Katerina to buy a wireless surveillance camera at an electronics store, used for baby supervision so they could supervise the boys, she installed it in the attic.

But something unexpected happened. A man, and his family moved to the house next door had a camera installed to his little son’s room. But one day while looking at the image of her baby’s room, an image malfunction happened and instead of her seeing her the same what she saw was the ritual of the three women torturing the children. A couple of days late she then realized that the signal she was intercepting was coming from her neighbors’ house.

The man recorded a video with the images and reported it to the police. On May 10, 2007, agents broke into the house. Klara and Katerina stood in front the door leading to the attic, trying to keep the agents from entering. The police officers removed them, broke the locks and entered. The officers couldn’t believe what they were seen, one described it be to be a horror movie scene, except it was real life. The stench of blood, urine and excrement was unbearable. The floor was sticky and the walls were covered in blood. One of the boys was unconscious, the other one was in shock. Both had horrible wounds.

Trial and Prison

Standing in front of the cage there was a girl holding a teddy bear. Seeing the agents, she ran straight into his arms. She told them that her name was Anika, she was 12 years old and that she was Klara’s adopted daughter. Once the agent took her out, and. while they were attempting to open the iron cage, Barbora thought it was the perfect opportunity to escape. A while later noticing that the girl had disappeared, they had the confirmation that she was a grown woman, and took part in the horrible actions committed against the boys.

Barbora had fled to Norway, where she claimed another false identity: A 13 years old boy named Adam. A Norwegian couple adopted her, believing she was a homeless child. It took almost a year for the police to find her. She was arrested, and sentenced to spend five years behind bars. Klara Mauerova was sentenced to nine years in jail for locking her sons Ondrej and Jakub in small cages, burning them with cigarettes and cutting them with sharp objects. Mauerova’s sister, Katerina, was given a 10-year sentence for similar.
