Monterey Park is in California, near Los Angeles. Monterey Park, located on the eastern outskirts of Los Angeles, has a population of about 60,000 people, the majority of whom are Chinese immigrants or first-generation Asian Americans.

On Garvey Avenue, Cheng Wan Choi, a Chinese businessman, operates a hotel. That hotel celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year last night. Over 10,000 people took part in it. Inside the Star Dance Studio, a Chinese-owned ballroom dance studio on West Garvey Avenue, was less than a block away from a Lunar New Year festival, a mysterious gunman entered openly carrying a sophisticated gun and firing blindly. This resulted in the deaths of ten people. Many people were hurt.

People were "pouring out of the location screaming" when police arrived at the Monterey Park ballroom, said department captain Andrew Meyer during a news conference.

The Star Ballroom Dance Studio first opened its doors in 1990, and its website contains numerous photographs of previous Lunar New Year celebrations, showing patrons smiling and dancing in party attire in its large, brightly lit ballroom.

The massacre shocked Asian American communities across the country, prompting police from San Francisco to New York to increase patrols at Lunar New Year celebrations in their respective cities. However, following the shooting, officials cancelled Sunday's events.

Status of victims

When the police received the information, they went on the search for the attacker. The man had already fled the scene. There is no information on who or why he attacked. The police are actively looking for him. According to officials, five of the ten people pronounced dead at the scene were women and five were men. The injured were quickly moved to local hospitals, where their conditions are critical.

About the Suspect

Robert Luna posted a tweet about the suspect he said that "On Saturday January 21, 2023 at 10:22 PM the suspect male/adult/Asian pictured above was involved in a shooting. Investigators have identified him as a Homicide suspect and he should be considered armed and dangerous."

The police department released pictures of the suspect, which appeared to have been taken from surveillance camera footage and showed him wearing glasses, a dark jacket, and a dark beanie hat with a white stripe.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, officers tracked a wanted van and heard one gunshot from within the van when they approached. Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old man suspected of shooting ten people at a ballroom dance hall late on Sunday, committed suicide by shooting himself. The reason for the shooting is unknown. The FBI and state authorities are also working on the case.

Second incident

Tran was involved in another incident about 20 minutes after the Saturday night shooting in Monterey Park, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna Luna. At the second location, Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio in nearby Alhambra witnesses reported Tran walking in with a gun, which patrons were able to grab. According to Luna, no one was shot and Tran fled. The weapon recovered from the Alhambra location was a "magazine-fed semi-automatic assault pistol" with an extended large-capacity magazine attached.

Condolences

Following the mass shooting, President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to the victims and ordered that flags be flown at half-staff at the White House and other federal buildings.

"Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night's deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park. I'm monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead " In a statement, Biden said.
