THE GREAT DETECTIVE

Henry wakes up to his alarm going off the next morning. He sits up in bed, and sighs. He gets up and gets ready for work, grabbing his gear. Henry walks out to Felix, waiting for him.

“How are you feeling, Henry?” asked Felix.

“I’m okay, Felix,” said Henry. “Thanks for asking.”

“Rough night?” Felix asks.

“Rough night,” answered Henry.

“I’m sorry about Flint,” said Felix.

Henry looked at him with pain in his eyes.

“Thanks. I am too,” answered Henry. “I gotta head to work.”

“See ya later, man.”

“See ya.” Henry goes to the door.

“Henry…,” said Felix. Henry turns to him. “You are the best man I have ever known and the best brother I could ask for.”

“Thanks, Felix. You too,” replied Henry.

Henry heads to work. When he gets to the precinct, everyone stares at him. They have a little memorial for Flint. He goes to pay his respects to his partner and friend. After a few minutes, Chief Delgado comes in.

“How are you holding up, detective?” asks Chief Delgado.

“I am doing okay, Chief. Thanks.” Henry answers. He looks at the picture of Flint on the memorial.

“I know it’s hard, but it’s part of the job. Flint cared about you and held you with the utmost respect. Always supported you and spoke for you through all this,” Chief Delgado says emphatically.

“He was a good man and a great partner,” said Henry.

There was silence for a bit. Finally, Chief Delgado broke the silence. “Oh, and one more thing. There is a gift for you on your desk,” said Chief Delgado. Henry looked confused as Chief smiled back and headed to his office. Henry made his way to his desk and found a card with a small box underneath. He takes the card and sees it’s from Flint. The card reads,

Henry,

If you are reading this, it means our mission to stop Slade has failed, and I didn’t make it out. I am sorry to leave you so soon, but I know you will get the job done. You are a great man who does whatever is necessary, even if it means breaking the rules for the safety of your fellow officers and the citizens of New York City. I followed you, and I would still no matter the cost, even now. No matter what, I will be with you, my friend. ALWAYS.

Henry finishes the letter and smiles, then chuckles. He opens the box to find a set of keys. Then a slip of paper falls out that says, “TIME TO RIDE AGAIN!” with a card and the number 16 on it.

“Detective!” shouts Chief Delgado. Henry looks at him. “Time to hit the streets. You are needed. Get out there and await dispatch.”

“Yes, sir,” replied Henry. He goes out to the car lot and has Zeus brought to him. He goes out to the guard at the lot gate and gives him the card. The guard takes it and swipes the card for garage #16. The door goes up, and Henry sees his blue mustang shiny and new.

“Thanks, Flint,” says Henry smiling. Henry and Zeus get in and drive onto the streets. “Dispatch. Stone 10-12.”

“Stone 10-4. Need you to respond to a 10-19 at the Ritz Tower. 456 Park Avenue,” says dispatch.

“Dispatch 10-4. Stone and Zeus en route. Let’s go, boy!” Zeus barks in agreement. They head down the street to their destination. In the distance, a man’s voice is heard somewhere underground near the East River. Two men are conversing.

“When do we move, sir?” One of the men asks.

“Soon. Once we have the plans and make the arrangements,” replies the other man. A man comes into view of a blazing fire dressed in a navy-blue suit. There’s a chair with a tall backrest facing the fire with another person seated dressed in a dark gray suit. The flames only lit half his face. “Our guest is here. Bring him to me at once.”

“Yes, sir,” replies the man in the navy-blue suit. The man leaves. The man in the chair looks into the flames and smiles.

“Sleep soundly, Henry. Soon I will return, and you will meet your end. Just as your family did,” says the man in the dark gray suit. The man starts to laugh, a laugh which grows louder and louder, echoing into the darkness.

Chief Delgado-(55) Chief of the New York Police Department 17th Precinct. Tall, broad-shouldered man, black hair, brown eyes, tan complexion, 5’10.” He is a stern/strict man but cares about Henry, intelligent. Henry and Flint’s boss.

CSU or Crime Scene Unit- unit of crime scene investigators who document an active crime or accident scene to collect, classify, and identify evidence analyzed later in a lab.

EMS or Emergency Medical Service- provides emergency medical care to those in incidents that cause severe injury or illness and transport via helicopter, ambulance, or other medical vehicles.

Felix: Henry’s Friend/Brother/Roommate- (27) Henry’s best friend and roommate, slim body, blonde hair, brown eyes, light tan complexion, 5’10.” He is brave, loyal to his friends, always there for them, supportive, kind, intelligent, and strong. Works at Charnas Law Firm as a law attorney.

Captain James Flint: Henry’s Friend/Partner-(32) police captain, tall, muscular body, reddish-brown hair, blue eyes, light tan skin, 5’10.” He is kind, strong, brave, intelligent, and does what is right. Works at the New York Police Department 17th Precinct.

HAU or Homicide Analysis Unit- identifies and analyzes patterns and trends in crime.
