Calab Luckett

Calab Luckett was murdered in cold blood. What do you know?

Christmas is supposed to be fun and full of excitement, but for one family, it only brings heartache. It was Christmas Eve when Calab was on his way to see his friends, looking at the Christmas trees that were adorned with brightly lit bulbs in bold colors and could be seen through the blinds in most of the homes along Riverside Drive in Evansville, Indiana. The air was crisp, and Calab was thankful for the ride from his brother-in-law, Richie Rivera, to see his friends at Woodland Park Apartments. Nobody knew that would be the last time Calab would see the lights on the Christmas trees or celebrate Christmas, or any other holiday with his family and friends. Nobody knew that before night's end, Calab would be dead, the victim of a single bullet wound to the head. In what seems to be normal practice, The Evansville Police Department called the death "suspicious", but little has been done to find out what happened to Calab Luckett.

According to records, Calab was shot in an empty apartment on Christmas Day of 2016 and found by a member of maintenance the day following. Calab had been active on his Facebook account until just after one o'clock in the afternoon of December 25, 2016. The maintenance man contacted Evansville Police when he noticed an apartment door was ajar. It was particularly out of place because the apartment was supposed to be empty. Pushing open the door, the shaken man found 18-year-old Calab Delmar Deshay Luckett on the floor, lifeless.

An update to Calab's cover photo was his last post to Facebook, just after 1 PM December 25, 2016.

Although it was reportedly 2:20 in the afternoon (a fact that was backed up by a shots fired call at the same time and from the same apartment building), not a soul heard or saw a thing. Cameras positioned outside the apartment in the common hallway of the apartment building captured images of someone leaving the apartment around the same time, but as of this writing, we have been unable to obtain the video from those cameras.

Although rumors of gang activity have been flying around, our investigation has been unable to uncover any such thing. The only reference to gang life that I found is a reference to "Devi Gang." Devi gang was created in 2015 as a memorial support group when 17-year-old Deviante Gaines was killed in the same apartment complex in which Calab was found deceased.

Calab visits the resting place of murder victim Deviante Gaines.

It is unfortunate that children are forming memorial support "gangs" for children who have been a victim of violent crime. Someone has to be the hero and step up. Someone saw what happened. Someone knows every detail. To that person, I'd like to let you know that Calab's mother, Jennifer, goes to sleep at night struggling to remember her son's voice. She longs to feel his hug one more time. She wants to hear his laugh. She would give anything to see him smile, just one more time. You know what happened, and you are afraid to tell. You are afraid of the consequences, and while I can understand the hesitation, it's time to tell the truth. Killing a man doesn't make you a man. Taking responsibility for your actions makes you a man.

If you know anything about the murder of Calab Luckett, call me on the Something Wicked Evansville Hotline at 812-250-1231, find me on messenger or email me at [email protected]. You don't have to give your name. Just tell me what happened, so we might bring his remaining family some peace.
