An Easy Case (extended)
When Samson studied law, he looked into the mirror and saw a hero. Graduation day gave him his superpowers. He thought everyday day would be like his favourite cartoon shows; every day a bad guy would get beaten and everyone would work as a team to bring down the criminal organisations. It didn’t take him long to realise that his life as a lawyer was anything but a whacky kids show. The hours were long. The pay was good but the balance between family life and work life always tipped in work’s favour.

It was the day before Christmas eve. The meeting of "Infinity Anonymous" had adjourned for the night. The members all exited the clubhouse, an abandoned old building located in the woods not far from Tammy's house, they did the secret handshake, bid each other goodnight and adjourned to their respective homeward trudge. The members ranged from age fifteen to seventeen, all girls, all students of Shankville High School and Maverley High School.

STILLWATERS
I'm not much for boats or water. Karen says, No surprise considering. After everything, Karen's visitors still sometimes ask, "Were you scared you were going to die?" At first, the consummate journalist, eager to explain and connect, I would struggle. I’d swim deeper and deeper into my mind to find an answer for them. What was I thinking back when, back when

Wrong Place
December 7th, 8:02am Bruce Dunnings entered his mother’s house, concerned because she hadn’t picked up his calls the previous day. Even when they were arguing, she always returned his calls. And of course, they had been arguing. She was an old woman with too much time on her hands, she had too many hobbies and too many of them brought her out of the house. When there was still no call from her on his phone that morning when he woke up he headed to her house. She couldn’t possibly be that angry at him.

Flashing lights lit up the neighborhood as a parade of activity converged in the 1500 block of Harrison Street. As the drizzling rain and slight fog rolled through, the ominousness of it remained lost to bystanders and neighbors until the meat wagon rolled up outside. One of the officers ran to the black van, telling them there were orders not to move the body.

Oakwood Regional High School Yearbook 2001-2002
My mom had told me she found my high school yearbook and would send it over in the mail. Months went by without the package arriving—as was mom’s way. I managed to put it out of my mind. When the parcel showed up on the lobby floor, the box bruised and tattered, it startled me. My body seemed to absorb early, instinctively to what my mind would later experience.

Forever Innocent
Headmaster Percy Blackburn took his spectacles off and polished them with a cotton handkerchief. He repeated this habit often, which signaled to the girls of the Chiller’s School for Young Women he was agitated, upset over a perceived transgression from one of his charges. Euphemia Wood, his assistant, would immediately fetch him a glass of absinthe in response. It was a habit that repeated itself often.

The train ride back to Delaware allowed Yawquisha to make some edits. She cropped here and snipped there on her laptop. The constant electric hum of the vessel eased her mind. Other passengers found themselves engaged in work as well. Her fingers turned to wings that flew over the keys.
