Burning Lili
Toss. Catch. Toss. Catch Her voice. Toss, catch. There’s no way, I think as I throw the baseball above my chest. I’m studying the caked, sponge-patterned paint on the ceiling, determined the memorize the terrain before the anniversary of my first full year in this room. I wonder if the kid who had this room before me learned the ceiling, too or if my methods of entertaining myself are just weird. I could read the patterns on my old ceiling like a favorite poem. My memory is good, really good, so why do I doubt what I heard? The ball connects with my hand, and I immediately toss it back into the air where it belongs.

Burning Lili
Aunt Rose is going to be pissed. I groan against the sunlight shining in my eyes, cursing it for not waking me up sooner. Tossing my blankets aside, I stumble to find a mostly clean pair of jeans from the floor and grab a bralette from the basket of fresh laundry Aunt Rose left by my bed yesterday. The cropped tee I slept in would have to suffice. I’m slipping on my second combat boot when my alarm plays Rhianna’s raspy voice, expressing that she’s had enough. I can’t help but agree. It’s a great song, but it may not have been the best choice in alarms for a grieving person. I hit snooze again out of habit and took the stairs two at a time.

Hidden Notes
It was a simple task - yet Jules felt a rush of endorphins. This chemical-induced bliss was all caused by a sleek Macbook she carried out of the office. With a delicate hold, like a baby bird that had fallen from its nest, she transported her golden ticket back to her car where she tucked it underneath her driver’s seat. It’s own vault, dark and secure.

Smile, Smile, Smile
“Smile, smile, smile, there’s always a reason” a voice said as I watched a slideshow of photos from the past year stream past my face. My computer always knew the best ones to pick. I sometimes wondered if we weren’t already living in a state of suspended animation, linked as we were to our own files like extraneous parts of mind and body.
