The tragic incident of a mass shooting in Maine, resulting in the loss of 18 lives, highlights the urgent need to prevent such massacres and address underlying mental health issues. My condolences to victims’ families and their loved ones. But, my prayers and thoughts go out to law-makers and our President to do something. America is overdue for a lot of things, but we need urgent action for gun violence. The right to bear arms is not enough to hide behind and shield the animosity aimed at the industrial weapon manufacturers who build, sell, and market these tools of death to children and adults. I understand profit over people and its seduction offering rewards for greed but at what costs? Is the margin for profit enough to bury the victims of gun violence within?

We are past the argument of permit to carry concealed or open carry; the response is necessary gun control and gun safety laws, policies, and punishment to protect innocent civilians. It is always a question that people ask after the incident what we could have done to flag an incident before it occurred, but individuals can take steps to prevent mass shootings. The steps include addressing mental health concerns, enacting gun control laws, and prioritizing law enforcement's role in removing assault weapons. The time is now!

Gun manufacturers and lobbyists pretend they lack influence, but the high violence level contradicts this. That level of violence negates the charade that gun manufacturers and their powerful lobbyists don’t bear the weight in working with the government to increase safety and security around access to weapons and quantities and types of firearms like non-military assault weapons.

The tobacco industry had to put bigger warning labels and make public service announcements about the health and welfare of smokers. Gun manufacturers skirt the laws they helped to create through lobbying and donations. But who is lobbying for us the potential victims? Bowling on a Wednesday night should not be a death sentence for anyone. Should it?

Addressing Mental Health Problems: To prevent mass shootings, it is crucial to prioritize mental health initiatives. We can take the following steps:

Increase access to mental health services: Governments should invest in mental health resources, ensuring that individuals have easy access to affordable and quality mental health care.

Promote early intervention and prevention: Implement programs that identify and support individuals at risk of developing mental health issues, providing them with interventions and support systems.

Reduce stigma: Encourage open discussions about mental health to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help, enabling individuals to access necessary treatments without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Training: Provide law enforcement training to assess personnel safety in situations that may warrant a community mental health provider is no doubt that the right to bear arms does not hide behind and shield the animosity directed at the industrial weapon manufacturers who make, sell, and market these tools of death to little children and adults who may bear arms. Especially those of color. Shoot, kill and ask questions later should not be the unwritten standard.

2. The need for legislative action to curb gun sales and control firearms: To resolve gun violence and prevent mass shootings, the need for legislative action is essential. Some key measures include:

Universal background checks: Implement comprehensive background checks for all gun sales, including private sales, to ensure that firearms do not end up in the wrong hands.

Closing gun show loopholes: Enforce regulations that require background checks for all purchases made at gun shows, eliminating the potential for individuals to bypass the system.

Restricting access to assault weapons: Implement stricter regulations on the sale and possession of assault weapons, considering factors such as capacity, features, and potential for mass casualties.

"Red flag laws: Establish red flag laws that allow"1 family members, law enforcement, or mental health professionals to petition for the temporary removal of firearms "from individuals who pose a threat to themselves"2 or others.

3. Law Enforcement’s Role in Getting Assault Weapons off the Streets: Law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in curbing gun violence and protecting communities. Here are some steps they can take:

Enhanced enforcement of existing laws: Law enforcement should prioritize the enforcement of existing gun control laws, ensuring that individuals who violate these laws face consequences.

Collaboration with communities: Foster partnerships with community organizations to promote trust and research about potential threats. Encourage community members to report suspicious activities or individuals who may pose a risk.

Gun buyback programs: Implement programs to buy back guns and reward individuals who voluntarily surrender their firearms, particularly assault weapons, in order to reduce the number of these weapons in circulation.

Prevention of mass shootings requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses mental health issues, controls firearms, and involves law enforcement in getting assault weapons off the streets.

Conclusion: Preventing mass shootings requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses mental health problems, implements legislative actions to control firearms, and involves law enforcement in getting assault weapons off the streets. By prioritizing mental health initiatives, enacting comprehensive gun control measures, and empowering law enforcement agencies, society can take significant steps towards preventing mass shootings massacres and creating safer communities. It is crucial for governments, communities, and individuals to work together to ensure the well-being and safety of all.
