Justice for the Innocent

Tom thought he committed the perfect crime when he murdered Serene in the woods. After all who would bear witness to his unthinkable act? A deer? A bird? Just the thought made him scoff. He never intended to take Serenes life. When she said she needed to see him he thought it was to mess around, but no the test she showed him and the two lines it bore sealed her fate.

Tom knew he couldn’t allow her to tell Emma his wife, she was supposed to be fling! Someone to play with on the side. So what he told Serene he loved her, neb said it all the time in the heat of the moment!

He just brought Serene to the woods to talk, surely she would see reason and do the...best thing for them both. When they went for a walk off the path she expected it was to make plans for their future. Silly girl had no inkling she was walking to her final resting place. That the moon would guide her way to her eternal rest.

Except it wasn’t eternal, not yet at least. You see a barn owl witnessed the event. Being wise and wanting Serene to find peace the owl agreed to let her spirit inhabit its body and make sure justice was served.

While Tom was whistling and marveling over the fact he was able to strangle her so easily, Serene was following from the sky and planning her method if justice.

She watched Tom go home to his wife and hug her, showering and joking about exercise. Serene wanted to peck his eyes out then and there but knew she must wait. She watched them in shock plan a nursery on the second floor. Emma was pregnant and the only baby Tom would allow birthed.

Outraged and sorrowful for her lost little one Serene decided the next day would be the day. She perched on the tree outside and watched Tom sleep peacefully, no remorse for his crime.

The next morning Tom went to the office, and Serene waited outside an open window. She was his secretary and when people asked where she was he told them she went abroad! The fool! Thinking he could disregard her so!

Her first act of justice was to use stones to make the word murdered in front of the building. When Tom noticed he quickly kicked the stones away and wondered who could have seen him.

This made him sweat and look at everyone suspiciously. All day he worried who could have found out and what they’d want for silence.

When he got home Serene put her next plan of action in place, she communicated with a Raven who squawked murdered as it flew by their home.

Tom was more on edge than Emma had ever seen and she thought he lost his mind when he mentioned a “blabbing bird.”

Weeks passed and each day a new message such as murder, killer, traitor would show either in pebbles or twigs and everyday Tom grew more unstable.

Finally two months after Serene was murdered the police came to the office. It appeared Serene was found and they had many questions.

Tom answered them nervously and he was very on edge. The Raven flew by once more squeaking murderer and Tom lost it.

“WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO?!” He proclaimed to the whole office. The officers raised their brows and asked about what? Tom was about to play it off but Serene showed in her owl form behind the officers backs. She used one claw to point at Tom and shake her head. This was Tom’s undoing. He saw her eyes and instantly was reminded of Serene. He ran to the officers feet and confessed everything leading them to the scene and giving every detail he could.

Wild eyed he look incredulous as the owl sat for the whole confession. He felt her presence and knew Serene had not gone into the afterlife as he’d hoped.

Serene thanked the Owl and made a deal, every year on the anniversary of her death she’d be allowed to inhabit the body of the Owl. She would find Tom in his cell and stare until he went into hysterics to remind him justice always prevails especially with the help of some of the wisest creatures known.
