A disturbing case reported from Powai, Mumbai, has drawn attention after police arrested a 28-year-old man accused of posing as a transgender person, entering an air hostess’s home and allegedly sexually assaulting her under the pretext of performing a ritual.
According to police information reported by The Times of India, the accused has been identified as Anil Shinde, 28. Police said the 25-year-old woman was alone at her third-floor apartment when the incident allegedly occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
How the Accused Allegedly Entered the Powai Building
Police said the man arrived at the residential building dressed as a transgender person and managed to gain the confidence of the security guard.
He allegedly went through the building knocking on several apartment doors before the air hostess opened hers.
The woman was reportedly worried about her husband, who was receiving treatment in hospital. Investigators say the accused used this information to convince her that he could remove an “evil eye” affecting the family and help improve her husband's condition.
Believing that the ritual might help, she allegedly allowed him inside the apartment.
Water Sprinkled During Alleged “Evil Eye” Ritual
According to the woman's complaint, the accused allegedly placed his hand on her head and sprinkled water on her while claiming to perform a ritual.
The woman told police she felt as though she had been hypnotised. She subsequently alleged that the man sexually assaulted her inside the flat.
Police reports place the alleged incident between approximately 12:20 p.m. and 12:50 p.m.
The allegation involving hypnosis or black magic is part of the complainant's account and should not be interpreted as scientifically established evidence that supernatural powers or hypnosis caused the assault.
Accused Allegedly Took ₹200 Before Leaving
In another unusual detail of the case, investigators said the accused allegedly collected ₹200 from the woman before leaving the apartment.
The woman later approached Powai police at around 11 p.m. and reported what had happened.
Police said she was initially traumatised and had difficulty explaining the incident. A female police officer reportedly spoke with her before investigators obtained a detailed account and began searching for the suspect.
More Than 100 CCTV Cameras Helped Police Track Suspect
After the FIR was registered, Mumbai Police began examining CCTV footage from the residential society and surrounding areas.
Investigators reportedly followed the suspect's movements using footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras, tracing him from Powai toward Kalwa.
Police eventually located and arrested Shinde from a slum area in Kalwa, reportedly within about four hours of the FIR being registered.
The speed of the investigation highlights how extensively CCTV footage can assist police when tracking a suspect across a large urban area.
Police Investigating Whether There Are Other Cases
Authorities are also examining whether the accused may have been involved in similar incidents in the past.
According to police statements reported in the media, Shinde allegedly told investigators that members of his family had begged while impersonating transgender people.
Police said they were gathering further details about his background and checking for possible previous offences.
Reports say the case includes allegations relating to rape and criminal intimidation, while police have also said provisions connected with black-magic practices would be examined. The accused remains in custody as the investigation continues.
An Important Distinction in the Mumbai Case
It is important not to generalise this alleged crime to India's transgender community.
Police reports specifically describe the accused as a man who was allegedly impersonating a transgender person. The allegations concern the actions of one individual and should not be used to stigmatise transgender people or hijra communities.
The central issue in the case is the alleged use of deception, fear and claims of supernatural healing to gain access to a vulnerable person's home.
Safety Lessons From the Powai Incident
The case is also a reminder to be cautious when an unknown person unexpectedly arrives at a home claiming to offer spiritual cures, blessings, medical help or solutions involving black magic.
Residents should consider verifying the identity of unfamiliar visitors, contacting building security when necessary and avoiding allowing strangers into a home simply because they claim to know private information or promise an immediate cure.
If someone feels threatened or believes a crime has occurred, contacting local authorities as soon as it is safe to do so can help preserve evidence and begin an investigation.
The Mumbai case remains an allegation, and guilt must ultimately be determined through the legal process.
