Killer Company, Part One

Andrei Chikatilo

Ukranian cannibal, Andrei Chikatilo.

Andrei Chikatilo was born in 1936 in the village of Yablochnoye in Ukraine to an absent father and a brutal, domineering mother. His mother claimed he had an older brother that was stolen and subsequently eaten by neighbors, a tale that wasn't hard to believe as Andrei was born during the agricultural recession to farmer parents. His young life was brutal, with his mother often reminding him of what happened to his brother. School was not easy for Andrei either. He was a small child and much weaker than his peers. After his father committed the unforgivable sin of being taken hostage as a prisoner of war during World War II, the schoolchildren found Andrei's father to be a traitor instead of a victim, and they punished Andrei for it every chance they got. Even through all the bullying at school and horrendous conditions, he lived inside his parents ramshackle shanty, and Chikatilo was an exceptional student and maintained high grades.

His first sexual experience was at age 15 when he wrestled a younger girl to the ground, ejaculating as he pinned her beneath him. Although Andrei did marry and had two children, he was unable to otherwise ejaculate unless he was in the act of killing his victim.

After a brief stint in the Russian Army, he joined the Communist party. His work record was unmarred, and Andrei attended Rostov University, and after five years, earned a degree in Russian literature. It wasn't long after that he was teaching the subject. When he failed to maintain control of his students, frustration turned to sexual assault. Although he would sexually assault two students, Chikatilo kept his job, a job that would send Chikatilo parading through the girl's dormitory on a regular basis as part of his job duties.

One of Ukranian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo's victims.

Andrei is a bit of an oddity in the serial killer world in that he did not kill until he was forty-two years of age. Andrei Chikatilo lured nine-year-old Yelena Zakotnova into the woods and killed her. Chikatilo had a penchant for tying up his victims and then the torture would begin. He would slash, bite, and tear open with his bare hands the flesh of the unfortunate souls in his charge. He gouged out the eyes because he believed his image would be imprinted on them for eternity. He chewed the noses off some of his victims. He explained calmly, almost joyfully, that he enjoyed slicing off tongues and chewing on them and wallowing in the internal organs of his prey. He claims to have never swallowed the flesh, only chewed on it before spitting it out.

Andrei Chikatilo's reign of terror would come to an end when he was arrested in November of 1990. He confessed to 56 murders and told police during the confession that he fancied the texture and taste of the uterus.

His trial would last two days and was riddled with the judge's admonishments to Chikatilo to shut his mouth and several "reminders" to Andrei that he was not, in fact, crazy. The guilty finding was quickly followed up with a sentence of death by firing squad.

Although Chikatilo sought post-conviction relief, his request for leniency was denied. February 15, 1994, his death sentence was carried out by way of a single shot to the back of his head by a pistol.
